Summary: 

The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) focuses on communities of color and other marginalized groups in the South with the goal of defending their rights and mobilizing efforts to win progressive policies that transform the social and political context in five Deep South states (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, and Mississippi.) Consistent with its mission, vision and strategic impact goals, the SPLC is instituting a service delivery model in each of the five states it operates focused on and informed by local concerns, context, strategy, solutions and collaboration. The ‘State Offices’ will add capacity to the Center and its efforts to collaboratively address issues unique and proximate to each state and to drive long-term, transformational/structural change.

Through its state office model SPLC will elevate state and local needs, and more effectively and collaboratively employ its organization-wide capabilities and expertise in the states that it operates. Each state office will be led by a State Director who will guide their respective state-based strategy in collaboration with other Center leaders and will provide administrative leadership for the office locations.

Primary Job Functions:

  • Supports Alabama State Director, as Project Manager for all office projects and initiatives.
  • Responsible for developing reporting and meeting structure for project teams
  • Address and resolve requests, concerns and inquiries in accordance with guidelines provided by the Alabama State Office Director;
  • Designs system for tracking and processing Request for Assistance (RFAs);
  • Organizes, tracks, and coordinates outreach and external relation efforts with community members, stakeholders and partners;
  • Provide thoughtful input and often develop communications targeted for employees;
  • Implement recurring inclusive and equitable processes and identify and recommend process improvements; 
  • Provide logistical support to other Alabama State Office working groups, projects, and initiatives as needed; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications –

Education and Related Work Experience:

  • A minimum of 3 years of significant community organizing and/or project management experience;
  • Project and program management experience with skills in consulting, facilitation with multiple stakeholders supporting and influencing;
  • Experience in effective team management is preferred;  
  • Strong work tenure preferable in a non-profit organization;
  • Experience in creating and or developing internal and external communications; and
  • High school diploma or GED.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Familiarity with Alabama’s social justice, legal, and/or civil rights community
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and have strong Excel and data analysis skills;
  • Strong persuasive verbal and written communication skills;
  • Strong writing and communication skills;
  • Solutions orientation and mindset;
  • Effective team-building skills;
  • Ability to use data to create reports and effectively communicate results to stakeholders;
  • Ability to multi-task, manage multiple constituents and multiple deadlines;
  • Must be proactive, resourceful, and have the ability to use good judgement to effectively resolve problems or issues that is consistent with policies and best practices;
  • Outstanding organizational and time management skills, including proven ability to efficiently manage multiple tasks and priorities;
  • Detailed oriented;
  • Must always respect and maintain confidentiality;
  • Commitment and passion for social justice issues;
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with the state and/or litigation processes preferred;
  • Commitment to the principles of Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion; and 
  • Commitment to fostering an anti-racist workplace culture and to anti-racist principles and learning.

Compensation:

This is a non-exempt role and the minimum starting salary is $60,517.00 annually ($29.09 per hour).  Salary is based on experience.

Work Designation:

This role has the following work designation options: 

  • Local Remote:  Will work remotely but is expected to attend work-related activities that occur at the SPLC offices or in the states in which the SPLC operates.
  • Telework:  Will work at an SPLC office at least three days per week and may work two days per week from an alternative work location.

Other Special Considerations:

This job is performed under general office conditions and is not subject to any strenuous physical demands or dangerous conditions.
