POSITION SUMMARY

Gas Operations is responsible for supplying natural gas to the Southern Company natural gas-fired fleet, representing more than 24,000 MW of generating capacity in the Southern core territory. The Project Manager will work closely with members of the Gas Supply and Energy Trading teams, as well as unit commitment and real-time operations to support the dual goals of reliability and maximizing value. The Project Manager's responsibilities will include monitoring of and compliance with organizational policies and controls, maintenance of standard processes and procedures, and leading our fuel analyst team in the development and execution of scheduling strategies across multiple natural gas pipelines, with the objective to minimize cost and maximize flexibility. Additionally, the successful candidate will seek opportunities to enhance efficiencies within the Gas Operations' work functions, specifically related to imbalance management, scheduling, and daily gas management. The job is located on the Southern Company trading floor in Birmingham, Alabama and will provide the successful candidate the opportunity to gain insight across a broad sweep of the business including long-term and short-term physical natural gas strategy development, power and environmental trading, fleet operations, risk control, and other functions.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Business, Accounting, or an equivalent field is required.An advanced degree in one of these fields is desirable.
  • Leadership experience is desirable.
  • Relevant experience in natural gas pipeline scheduling is preferred.
  • Broad knowledge/experience in the areas of natural gas supply procurement, storage management, pipeline operation, and fleet operations is preferred.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Monitor compliance with organizational policies and key controls.
  • Lead the identification, documentation, and maintenance of key standard processes and procedures within Gas Operations.
  • Act as point person for monthly closeout processes, ensuring completeness and accuracy, working closely with Consolidated Fuel Accounting to make any necessary adjustments or cost reallocations.
  • Seek opportunities to enhance efficiencies within the Gas Operations' work functions, specifically related to imbalance management, scheduling, and daily gas management.
  • Primary support for OPCO fuel requests, including Public Service Commission audits and filings.
  • Manage weekend coverage, with the ability to schedule on all pipelines and participate in weekend coverage rotation as needed.
  • Provide leadership, development, and direction to our natural gas scheduling team by ensuring outstanding performance and continuous improvement in meeting the following objectives:
  • Effectively managing pipeline constraints in scheduling, minimizing cuts and maximizing deliveries.
  • Minimizing pipeline imbalance through out of cycle nominations and other effective means.
  • Ensure an effective team environment exists with proper balance and support.
