Public Art Director
Job Description
Powerhouse Arts is a not-for-profit organization committed to creative expression. Housed in a purpose-built-facility in Brooklyn, the organization hosts an extended network of art and fabrication professionals and educators who work together to co-create and share artistic practices vital to the well-being of artists and the communities to which they serve. Our new facilities house fabrication services, production services, production spaces, and member workshops for artisans.
The Public Art Director will be responsible for leading Powerhouse’s Public Art Program, dedicated to the development, production, installation, and care of large-scale and ambitious public artworks for individual artists, cultural institutions, and for-profit entities. Managing an FT Production Manager alongside a part-time team of fabrication and installation experts, s/he oversees the business development of the program, customer relations, the selection and production of all projects, program and project budgets, and ensures alignment between program activities and Powerhouse’s impact and equity goals.
Responsibilities:
● Develop and promote new business development for the department
● Work closely with the Production Manager to develop production workflows and manage the execution of all department services.
● Advocate for the department within the organization by attending leadership meetings, giving presentations, and meeting with the board of directors when necessary.
● Establish and oversee performance goals for the program, including business planning, financial modeling, and quarterly budget reporting.
● Develop and maintain good relationships with internal staff, clients, vendors, donors, tenants, and potential partners.
● Develop relationships with external businesses who have complementary fabrication expertise, and subcontract services where needed.
● Develop and manage the production team, including hiring and onboarding new fabricators and installers as needed.
● Screen and select new projects for feasibility and mission alignment and offer referrals and advice to clients of declined projects.
● Maintain communications with past clients and maintain contact info and relevant relationship notes in CRM, or in a spreadsheet if CRM is unavailable.
● Conduct rudimentary market research via online resources, as well as client and collaborator inquiries, in order to adjust the business model accordingly.
● Assist Operations and Facilities departments in developing and managing shop safety protocols.
● Interface with all other departments to implement and share resources; loaning tools, training staff on equipment, and executing in-house projects.
● Contribute to Powerhouse’s mentorship initiatives by hosting interns and apprenticeships and participating in the organization’s Public Engagement programs; uphold Powerhouse’s commitment to knowledge-sharing by contributing to the dissemination of best practices in the field; represent the Public Art program in public forums about fabrication and public art production
- Procure, activate, and arrange maintenance on essential tools in the department

• Highly organized and detail-oriented
• Proactive problem solver and communicator
• Solid written and verbal communication skills; Excellent proofreading skills
• Significant experience writing and editing correspondence
• Flexible, creative, organized, thorough, and resourceful
• Fluent in G Suite, Microsoft Office Suite, Mac, and Dropbox platforms
• Comfortable using and/or learning communication and project management tools such as Asana, RingCentral and Slack
• Previous experience supporting senior executives and managing complex calendars is preferred, as well as the ability to work well under pressure in a busy and dynamic environment

Compensation & Benefits: Salary range is $100,000-$115,000 and commensurate with experience. Benefits include health insurance, an employer-sponsored retirement plan, generous paid vacation, and a Citibike membership.
