Job Summary

The Public Relations manager role works within the Enterprise Communications team to deliver external communications strategies that build and protect the company's brand and reputation, positions it as thought leader, ensures consistent messaging, and earns it relevancy. This position is responsible for establishing relationships and improving engagement with external audiences, such as key industry influencers, media, advertisers, and trade associations. This candidate helps to shape communications strategy, build and curate OneAmerica's external presence and launch new visibility projects leveraging earned media, paid advertising, and owned methodologies. They should demonstrate an ability to take smart risks, solve problems, influence peers and senior leadership and deliver results. A natural storyteller and experienced communications professional, this person holds a deep understanding of media relations, advertising, and social media best practices as well as compliance standards.

Primary duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop strategies and implement the overall external communications plans (this includes public relations, social media advertising, executive visibility, industry standing, stakeholder relations, etc.)
  • Collaborate with business line and enterprise communications teams to develop and execute a strategic external communications plan designed to drive market visibility with business and consumer audiences by leveraging paid, earned, and owned channels
  • Serve as a trusted advisor and provide strategic counsel to senior leadership and key stakeholders across the company
  • Enhance and cultivate relationships with the media, advertisers, and trade associations
  • Proactively pitch stories positioning OneAmerica and executives as experts on specific topics
  • Prepare spokespeople and leaders for media interviews and speaking engagements
  • Write and edit press releases, articles, media responses, social media posts, ad copy, etc. to advance external comms strategies.
  • Measure and evaluate the effectiveness of external communications program monthly, quarterly, and annually
  • Deliver content that is consistent with the OneAmerica writing style, voice, tone, and compliance standards
  • Understand and align content with enterprise and line of business priorities
  • Participate in cross-functional working teams that consist of different marketing and communications disciplines
  • Manage and prioritize multiple projects
  • Support crisis communications efforts

Job Requirements

Required Education and/or Certifications

  • Degree or certifications related to public relations, external communications or the financial services industry will be helpful or equivalent work experience.

Required Work Experience

  • 5-7 years professional experience in communications, public and/or media relations roles.
  • Strong background in PR, media relations, advertising, trade association, social media strategy
  • Proven success in developing and executing external communications strategies and plans
  • Demonstrated ability in developing and executing executive positioning programs, working with senior leaders, and collaborating across a multi-disciplinary marketing team in a matrixed organization
  • Experience working with national, local and trade media with financial services a bonus
  • Excellent communication skills, including writing and speaking
  • Experience serving as a media spokesperson
  • Or any combination of education and experience which would provide an equivalent background

Salary Band: 06B

This selected candidate will be expected to work hybrid in Indianapolis, IN.The candidate will also be expected to physically return to the office in CA, WI, IN or ME as business needs dictate or for team-building and collaboration.
