Quantum Control Plane Architect Team Lead
Job Description
PsiQuantum is on a mission to build the world’s first fault tolerant quantum computer capable of tackling today’s most intractable computational challenges to deliver transformative results.   We know that means it will need roughly 1 million qubits and will be building scale in size.Â
Quantum computing is expected to deliver breakthroughs for today’s still impossible computational tasks. By harnessing the laws of quantum physics, quantum computers can provide exponential performance increases over even the most powerful of today’s conventional supercomputers offering the potential for extraordinary advances across a broad range of applications including climate, energy, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, finance, agriculture, transportation, materials design, and many more.Â
PsiQuantum is uniquely positioned to deliver on the promise of quantum computing. Our architecture is based on photonics which gives us the ability to produce our components using high-volume semiconductor manufacturing processes, the same processes that have been applied in telecommunications and data center applications for decades. Since photons don’t feel heat, we can take advantage of existing cryogenic cooling systems, the kind that have been operating at facilities like Stanford Linear Accelerator (SLAC) since 2018. And because photons are basically light, they can move between subsystems using standard fiber connectivity, without the need for transduction in and out.Â
Our team is working across the full stack of quantum computing, from quantum architecture to photonic chip manufacturing, advanced opto-electronic packaging, hardware systems design, quantum algorithms and software tools, and cryogenic cooling.  We’re a highly motivated and collaborative group focused on a singular goal - building the world’s first Fault Tolerant Quantum Computer on the fastest path possible.Â
There’s more work to be done and we are looking for exceptional talent to join us on this extraordinary journey!Â
Job Summary:
The Networking and Electronics Systems Engineering group orchestrates the development of the control systems and management & data planes of a sophisticated and complex distributed computing system. This is all focussed on the mission of coordinating the hardware development, manufacturing, and deployment of the first fault-tolerant quantum computer. We are looking for a control/data/management plane lead engineer to drive the efforts of developing the control software (and integration of hierarchies and dependencies within of those systems) and drive those into operations for the initial several iterations of the platform.
Responsibilities:
- Design of control, management, and data plan architecture for large scale distributed compute system.
- Code architecture into real-time OS, systems, FPGA and embedded environments.
- Integrate with 3rd party systems such as cryogenic, orchestration, event management, tracing, policy management, and security management.
- Management of a team dedicated to system control.
- Update feature documentation as necessary in coordination with other teams (QPU, system design, etc.).
Experience/Qualifications:
- BS, MS, PhD. degree in Physics, Math, or Computer Science or equivalent required.
- 10+ years’ experience in designing and coding real time software components & systems within the context of a large data/control/management plane structure.
- Strong understanding of low-level development in C/C++ or Rust.
- Experience with languages used in integration/higher level orchestration – Python.
- Verilog and microcontroller experience.
- Ability to code into Linux (userspace and kernel) and embedded environments.
- Designed orchestration of real-time server, networking and controller/microcontroller workloads.
- Developing systems management or integration with existing ecosystems.
- Data centre deployment experience is a must.
- People/team management experience is a plus.
- Demonstrated verbal, written and presentation skills.
- Proven team player with an ability to work effectively across departments, sites, and time zones.
- A results-driven “doer”, preferably with experience in a high-throughput, rapid-delivery work environment.
- A problem solver, with an analytical mindset.
