Reports to: Engineering Manager
Location: Loveland, CO
Division: Engineering/R&D
Compensation: $70,000 - $150,000 (Depends on experience, please see levels below)

The Lighting team works with forward-thinking fleets to engineer, deliver, and manage full transportation electrification solutions, including vehicles, charging, data analysis, and energy infrastructure.
Lightning eMotors designs and manufactures zero-emission all-electric medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, including delivery trucks, shuttle buses, passenger vans, chassis-cab models, and city transit buses. Position Summary
We are hiring for several positions in our R&D Division within the Engineering Department; and we have positions that range from R&D Engineer level I to Lead Platform roles. Our R&D engineers are responsible for conceptualizing, designing, and testing both systems and products in order to meet high level objectives. Additionally, they create DVP & Rs for systems and designs as well as troubleshoot all new systems in the field and the lab.
Any and all offers are based on several factors including education, experience, and skills. Please see below for requirements for each level.
Responsibilities
- Conceptualize, design, and test new systems and products to meet high-level objectives
- Investigate new technologies and components for application in Lightning Systems products
- Create DVP&R’s for new systems and designs
- Commission and troubleshoot new products, both in the lab and in the field
- Refine complex data sets into usable information and reports
- Create system-level designs of various mechatronics systems related to commercial EV’s
- Other duties as assigned

- Technically minded: You should be able to read drawings and prints as well as electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical schematics.
- Problem solving: Use analytical, reasoning, and critical thinking skills to solve problems and troubleshoot issues in lab and field settings.
- Communication: Demonstrated ability to interact respectfully with all colleagues and customers. Clear and concise written and verbal communication skills are essential along with the ability to listen intently to others.
- Time management: Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously, meet deadlines, remain organized, and focused on work in a manufacturing environment; as well as maintain accuracy and high attention to detail in fast-paced environment.
- Teamwork: Work with cross-functional teams and build strong partnerships with other employees. Be motivated to follow-through on projects as an individual and teammate.
What we require:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Controls Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field; or equivalent work experience in a directly related role
- Demonstrated experience writing control logic in Simulink, LabVIEW, Raptor, and/or Motohawk
- Demonstrated experience with CAN bus diagnostics and data logging with CANalyzer, PCAN, and/or Kvaser
- Experience designing thermal management systems
- Experience writing component and system specifications to meet high level objectives
What we prefer:
- ABET certified degree program
- Automotive industry experience
- Experience with high-voltage DC systems—PHEV, EV, or FCEV applications are highly preferred
- Understanding of basic EV system architecture and components
- Knowledge and practical application of CAD systems
- Experience turning customer expectations into engineering requirements
Engineering levels: all degrees should be in an Engineering related course of study
- Engineer levels I and II: up to 2 years of professional experience combined with a Bachelor’s, or an advance degree combined with some work experience
- Senior: minimum of 5 years of experience with a Bachelor’s; or 3 years of experience with a Master’s degree; or a PhD; or equivalent work experience
- Lead: Minimum of 8 years of experience with a Bachelor’s; or 6 years of experience with a Master’s; or 3 years with a PhD; or equivalent work experience
