R&D Scientist Intern (Summer)

The Elevator Pitch 

Do you want to gain hands-on experience in Research & Development (R&D)? Are you eager to learn and develop critical skills for your future career? Do you have a love for learning new things every day?

In this 10-week R&D Scientist Intern role, you will be responsible for researching, testing, and evaluating new sensors, artificial intelligence algorithms, and/or augmented reality products. Not only will you develop skills in scientific research, but you will also gain exposure to the ins and outs of the company and to the other departments and how they operate in relationship to Research and Development.

Success in the Role: What are performance outcomes over the first half and second half of the internship you will work toward completing? 

In the first 5 weeks, you will:

• Understand Evolv, our product and culture, what we do, and why we do it
• Work together with a team to solve interesting research problems requiring the use of advanced math, stats, physics, and computer science
• Be actively learning, by reading literature, working hands on with hardware and sensors, and exploring new algorithms

• Develop experimental test plans to quantitatively differentiate solution A from solution B
• Utilize general purpose software tools (e.g. Java, C/C++, or Python) to collect data
• Communicate and work closely with the hiring manager on your project
• Continue to be enthusiastic about taking on new tasks and learning new skills

In the last 5 weeks, you will:

• Use an analytical software tool (e.g. Matlab, Python, or R) for data storytelling and to present the technical results and insights from the R&D project
• Surface innovative ideas and recommendations back to the team that can be used to inform corporate, and product strategy
• Show evidence of personal/professional growth
• Have a better idea of what you want or don’t want out of your career

• Be able to look back throughout the internship and feel as if you had contributed something meaningful and impactful to the company
• Walk away from the internship proud of what you accomplished

The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

• Lead the research and discovery phase to identify new and innovative solutions that leverage sensors, artificial intelligence, and/or augmented reality to solve an Evolv customer problem
• Develop and execute an experimental test plan to quantitatively evaluate, characterize, and compare multiple solutions
• Develop business savviness by sitting in on department Q&As and Executive Leadership presentations to gain knowledge from individuals in different departments and levels at Evolv

What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team? 

• You will be joining the Evolv Innovation Center team and reporting to the EIC Principal Investigator. The small team contains a range of experience levels from entry, mid and senior.
• The team culture is one based on building trust, collaboration, on-going development through kindness, authenticity, courage, drive and fun!

Where is the role located? 

• The location of this role is based in Waltham, MA with some flexibility in being remote some days.
• This is a paid internship with a range of $15-$21 an hour, dependent on your academic school year.
