Summary

The Recreation Therapist is aligned under the Spinal Cord Injury and Disorders (SCI/D) Service at the Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System (VASDHS), whose purpose is to provide rehabilitation and care to those inpatient and outpatient Veterans and Active Duty members with SCI/D who may also have multiple diagnoses such as traumatic brain injuries, amputation, respiratory disorders, neurological disorders, orthopedic conditions, psychiatric diagnoses, and chronic cardiovascular diseases.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education: The following education requirements apply to the recreation therapist, creative arts therapist (art), creative arts therapist (dance/movement), creative arts therapist (drama), and creative arts therapist (music): (1) Recreation Therapist (a) A bachelor's degree or higher, from an accredited college or university, with a major in therapeutic recreation or recreation/leisure, with an option and/or emphasis in therapeutic recreation. The degree must be approved by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC); OR, (b) A bachelor's degree or higher in any field from an accredited college or university and must be a certified therapeutic recreation specialist (CTRS). The degree must be approved by the NCTRC. If hired under this education, the certification cannot be waived.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

AQUATICS REQUIREMENTS: Obtain certification for Aquatics Therapy if applicable.

DRIVING REQUIREMENTS Possess a valid state class c driver's license. A periodic medical evaluation will be required at least once every two years in accordance with 5 CFR 930.108 for those employees who operate Government-owned or leased vehicles. The SCI RT is not authorized to transport passengers in a commercial vehicle as defined by the Department of Motor Vehicles, California Commercial Driver Handbook. Specifically, a commercial vehicle is a motor vehicle or combination used for hire to transport passengers or property or which:
  • has a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more.
  • is designed, used, or maintained for carrying more than 10 passengers.
  • tows a vehicle or trailer, which has a GVWR of 10,001 pound or more.
  • transports hazardous materials which requires placards.
  • tows any combination of two trailers or vehicle and trailer.
Preferred Experience: Experience working with people with spinal cord injury and/or VA work experience.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
