Job Description

Global Science & Technology, Inc (GST), a growing scientific and high technology company, is seeking a Remote Sensing Scientist to support the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES-16/17/T) at NOAA/NESDIS/STAR.

This position is located in College Park, MD but is temporarily approved for telework due to Covid-19. A hybrid model of onsite and telework each week will likely be put in place in the coming months.

Position Summary:

GST seeks a highly motivated candidate to support calibration and validation of the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) on the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES-16/17/T) at NOAA/NESDIS/STAR. As a member of the GOES-R Calibration Working Group (CWG), the candidate will monitor the accuracy of radiometric and geometric calibration for all channels of GOES imaging systems. This position involves the participation in pre-launch and post-launch calibration and validation activities of GOES-18 and additional geostationary systems.

Primary Duties:
  • Support radiometric, spectral, and geometric calibration and validation of GOES observations
  • Develop, improve, and implement calibration methodologies
  • Work with the GOES team to archive the history of performance and quality
  • Monitor GOES ABI performance
  • Support anomaly detection, characterization, and resolution.
  • Investigate root causes of anomalies.
  • Disseminate analysis results to calibration specialists, higher level product developers, instrument vendors, instrument operators, project managers, international partners, and other appropriate stakeholders.
  • Support Pre-launch, Post-launch activities, and the Beta and Provisional Maturity Reviews as necessary.
  • Publishing research results in peer-reviewed journals.

Required Education/Experience/Skills:
  • A Master's degree in remote sensing, engineering, or a related physical science.
  • Experience with processing remote sensing data using a variety of languages such as IDL, Python, MatLab, C++, FORTRAN, etc.
  • Broad knowledge of physical basis of remote sensing
  • Familiarity with radiative transfer in the atmosphere
  • Skills of quantitative data analytics
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to work with others as part of a research team
  • Ability to work independently on complex problems
  • Ability to work in a culturally diverse environment


Desired Experience:
  • Experience with satellite data applications
  • Experience with satellite senor calibration and characterization
  • Experience troubleshooting instrument anomalies
