Rights & Permissions Manager
Job Description
*This position is on our hybrid schedule at our New Rochelle office.
Position:
Rights and Permissions Manager within the Department of Legal and Business Affairs.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provides direction and oversight of all company rights and permissions, including obtaining digital, print and/or audio rights and clearances from third-party vendors.
- Drafts and reviews all photo permission contracts for execution through contract management system after Photo Department negotiation.
- Supervise the handling of all incoming requests for permissions.
- Negotiate permissions and license agreements, and draft permissions, with authors, and domestic and international publishers to secure rights for use of content in the company's print and digital products.
- Manages maintenance of permissions within the contract management database and tracks important follow-up items, such as schedules, renewals, and payment terms.
- Instructs/delivers invoices on paid permissions to A/P.
- Oversees post-execution matters relating to rights and permissions, including the monitoring of compliance to agreement terms (this may include proofreading, and monitoring text and jacket changes in books scheduled for publication).
- Develop and maintains relationships with potential foreign and domestic rights customers.
- Assist in the preparation of events such as book fairs.
- Serve as key contact on all rights-related questions and permissions issues for staff and external vendors.
- Periodically review permissions/contracts and update as needed to reflect changing business models.
- Maintains standard agreement's structure and templates.
- Provide information on publishing rights, and copyright to authors and others.
- Prepares and distributes regular status reports on permissions projects including budget-to-actual reporting.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree and 5 or more years' experience in publishing or closely related experience
- Experience working with all levels of an organization, including senior executive leadership
- Strong communication and excellent writing skills
- Excellent negotiating and problem-solving skills
- Ability to balance attention to detail with efficiency are essential
- Familiarity with rights management systems and the use of rights metadata throughout the company (such as in sales, marketing, and accounting systems)
- Familiarity with contract management systems for management of permissions and licensing contracts
- Ability to multitask, work in pressure-filled situations, and meet long-term or short deadlines
- Skilled at absorbing information quickly
- Proficient in Microsoft Office suite such as Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of copyright law, contract preparation experience, and some legal education.
Five years of publishing experience, including rights licensing, subsidiary rights, intellectual property management, and permissions management.
*The base salary range represents the low and high end of the expected salary range for the position. The base salary offered may depend on a variety of factors such as geographic location, experience, education, and skill level.
