ABOUT THE POSITION
The Risk Management Intern will be part of the Risk Management Department responsible for assisting in risk financing, claims management, risk analysis, risk control, employee health and safety and business continuity projects.
HOW YOU'LL MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Risk Financing and Insurance
- Assist with the workers' compensation program renewal to include completion of the application, renewal strategy with insurance broker, proposal review and participate in the final policy decision.
- Assist with the renewal of the drone insurance program. Edit program components, interview internal stakeholders, complete insurance application, submit application details online, and work with insurance broker to finalize the placement of the policy. Review and update corporate guidelines regarding the use and operations of drones for advertising shoots and operational use in our distribution centers. Once complete, present the renewal results and guideline changes to the VP Treasurer.
- Complete the automobile and stock throughput premium allocations.
- Work with insurance broker to build the 2023 insurance policy digest, and the 2024 premium forecast. Share the policy digest with external auditors and present the premium forecast to finance teams across the globe.
- Assist the risk manager with the review and approval of renewed insurance policies. Audit policy terms and conditions to validate compliance with binders and insurer quotes/proposals.
Employee Health & Safety
- Working with the environmental health and safety program manager to design a quarterly safety dashboard to disseminate safety indices to senior management, operational teams and the company board of directors.
- Assist with the creative updates to the Risk Management and Health & Safety web pages maintained on the corporate intranet site, called The River. Focusing on content delivery, design, education of risk and safety information and tools.
- Assist the distribution safety teams to refresh their monthly topic training posters and supervisor talks.
Risk Analysis and Risk Control
- Learn how to identify red flags in insurance sections of contracts/agreements and negotiate changes. Work with our corporate procurement teams to review contracts and provide consultative advice on acceptance of contractual insurance language.
- Shadow property and casualty loss control consultants during surveys of local retail stores.
- Understand the certificate of insurance issuance and acceptance process. Work with the risk program manager to manage the outgoing certificate request process for property and casualty certificates.
- Assist in the development of Non-Commercial Motor Vehicle (NCPV) Safety Program: identify what regulations govern the need for a NCPV; what are the program components (are they state specific); and what are the program benefits? In addition, collaborate with our HR teams on specific program elements, to include drivers training; DMV checks; and possible adjustments to employee job descriptions.
Claims Management
- Work with risk manager and risk program manager to understand the process for filing casualty and property claims. Actively participate in meetings with adjusters and broker claim consultants.
- Participate in carrier claims reviews, to understand how insured claims are managed through the process from start to finish.
Business Continuity
- Assist with the development of business continuity plans for Columbia. Work with team to participate in the process of building business impact analysis statements, creating continuity plans and training on the plans.
- Participate in tabletop exercises. Learn the process for developing scenarios for exercises with operational leaders and witness functional teams as they go through the exercise. Assist with guiding teams to update plans.
YOU ARE
- Information seeking, with good analytical skills, problem solving skills, and strong verbal and written communications skills
- Able to operate with some independence and follow general guidelines
- A partner who can build working relationships across the organization to help support risk management initiatives
- Familiar with Windows-based platforms and have the computer and entry level data management skills to effectively manage those systems to communicate and create reports.
- Able to manage multiple competing priorities with guidance and balance projects and conflicting and sometimes changing deadlines as needed.
YOU HAVE
- Consistent progress toward completion of a bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Health & Safety, Mathematics, or related field.
- A minimum cumulative GPA of a 2.7 from an accredited college or university.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
- Current student with one of the following academic standings: Rising Senior, Senior, Graduate/ MBA student
- Degree relevant to the internship you are applying for
- Must be able to participate in 10-week program for either date option provided above
- Must be able to work onsite at our headquarter location for the duration of the internship- interns will partner directly with their managers regarding expectations to work collaboratively in office specified days of the week
NON-LOCAL CANDIDATE CONSIDERATIONS
- Relocation assistance & housing is NOT provided- these costs and arrangements would be the responsibility of the intern for the entirety of the program
