Job Description

At Canvas we are developing technology that improves the quality and affordability of the places where we work and live while improving the working conditions of the people who build these spaces.  Our mission is to empower people to build in bold new ways. Our team has spent the past several years engineering and developing a new machine that keeps workers safe, improves their job conditions, and produces great budget, schedule and quality outcomes. At the same time, we have been building a culture at Canvas that empowers our employees to do their best work, while having fun and advancing their careers.

This person will play a key role in defining how robots behave on a construction site by guiding algorithm development and implementation for our robotic construction platform. You will be responsible for the creation and deployment of behaviors from concept through implementation and testing. This includes researching state-of-the-art approaches, early prototyping, integration into the software stack, and debugging on the hardware. As a member of the robotics team you will have visibility across the engineering units and effectively coordinate debugging efforts on the full system.

A main focus of this position will be implementing planning and control algorithms for a robot manipulator.  A person in this role can expect to be an individual contributor for one to two years as we continue to grow the team.

Who You Are:

  • Experience with path planning and kinematics on robot arms
  • Hands-on experience writing software to control physical systems
  • 3+ years of industry experience building and delivering production code
  • Strong linear algebra skills
  • ROS experience
  • C++ and Python in a Linux environment
  • Software fundamentals (i.e., iteration, data structure, object oriented programming, bits and bytes)
  • 5+ years of robotics engineering experience, not counting university classes
  • Preferably, experience developing production navigation technologies
  • Preferably, experience bringing up and debugging new hardware
  • Preferably, experience integrating new sensing/state estimation methods

What You'll Do

  • Develop and integrate robot arm manipulator technology, from path planning algorithms to higher level behaviors
  • Work closely with the rest of the team, supporting other areas of development
  • Testing new algorithms and code on the hardware
  • Identify issues with the platform and coordinate with the engineering team during the debugging and revision process

Why You Should Join Canvas

  • If there are items under the “Who You Are” section that you are working towards or would like to pursue, we still encourage you to apply. Our promise is that a real person is reviewing your application when received
  • Autonomy and support to grow into your career at a growing startup
  • Excellent benefits, including fully covered medical, vision, and dental
  • The ability to work in a sweet office in SF with some pretty cool robots
  • And of course the opportunity to work with some of the coolest people working on those robots in the Bay Area!
Safety
Safety at Canvas Construction is a top priority. We are committed to providing safe working conditions for all our employees. While not all employees are out in the field, we know how important it is to provide proper training, protocols and PPE to all employees. Upon hire all employees are provided with steel-toe boots and safety training in their professional settings. Additionally, employees are also expected to employ best practices to maintain safety and ensure that their workspaces are clear of potential dangers.

This role operates primarily in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, printers and monitors. This is largely a sedentary role; however, some ability to move laptops, open cabinets and bend or stand as necessary is required.

Being fully vaccinated and boosted against COVID-19 is a condition of employment at Canvas.  We provide accommodations for religious or medical reasons.
