Safety Project Manager
Job Description
The Safety Project Manager works collaboratively with teams and department leaders throughout Hebrew Rehabilitation Center and Hebrew SeniorLife to design and implement safety projects and programs to ensure the safe provision of care and promote the culture of safety at HSL spanning patient care, environment of care, emergency preparedness, and workforce safety. The Safety Project Manager, in collaboration with the safety steering Committee and sub-committees, facilitates the identification and understanding of, and response to, safety events and concerns by using appropriate quantitative and qualitative tools. As an agent of change, the Safety Project Manager will serve as a catalyst to create a culture that continuously strives for, and embraces a culture of, safety and in which all employees are engaged as participants in problem solving.
II. Core Competencies:
- Ability to coach teams to select appropriate outcome measures and targets for safety projects.
- Ability to engage front-line staff and direct care teams in meeting deadlines and hitting project objectives in an organized and transparent way.
- Ability to collect large quantities of data and analyze them (with support from content and clinical experts) to select those facts that are relevant for the intent of the project and to communicate them in a concise, accurate and timely manner.
- Knowledge of quality improvement reporting and data analysis tools used in the industry
- Strong customer service orientation
- Ability to multi-task and work with deadlines.
- Ability to influence and negotiate without authority
- Demonstrated ability to autonomously drive and manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Comfortable with ambiguity and a matrixed environment
III. Position Responsibilities:
- Build trust with HSL leaders and project teams while asking them to challenge the status quo and identify areas of opportunity for improvement
- Facilitate and manage safety improvement projects in close partnership with Safety Steering Committee and sub-committee chairs including:
- Collaborate with Safety Steering Committee and sub-committee chairs to identify and prioritize safety improvement opportunities
- Assist in developing project proposals and charters
- Aid teams in determining metrics, developing and executing data collection strategies, and conducting data analysis
- Analyze issues and work to identify root causes
- Facilitate process mapping sessions with project teams as appropriate
- Assist with definition and evaluation of potential solutions
- Guide development of improvement implementation plans and control plans
- Ensure cross-functional alignment and resource allocation is appropriate for successful completion
- Identify, communicate, and pro-actively manage project risks in partnership with project leaders and sponsors
- Assume administrative tasks as required (scheduling, activity tracking, meeting summaries, follow-up) to drive projects to completion
- Communicate project status updates and results in a concise and meaningful manner
- Facilitate and manage improvement projects with other safety-oriented service lines such as Infection Control and Occupational Health
- Coach individuals and teams to understand and apply process improvement tools and techniques
- Participate in data collection as needed to demonstrate value of ongoing and completed safety improvement projects
IV Qualifications:
- BA/BS required, preferably in a healthcare-related field (nursing, psychology, public health, epidemiology), data management, organizational management or related field
- Master’s degree in public health, health care administration, business administration or related area preferred
- 2-4 years of quality improvement, project management and/or direct-care clinical experience
- Ability to build effective working relationships with all levels of staff and management
- Excellent written, oral, and presentation skills with the ability to communicate effectively to all levels of staff and management
- Advanced knowledge of PowerPoint and Excel
- Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification a plus
