Job Summary: Responsible for the engineering activities within a business area. Works closely with the Management to define and implement the strategy for acquisition of new business. For existing business, the Chief Engineer is responsible for working with engineering staff and the functional departments to ensure the technical approach and engineering planning meets program needs and is carried out within Company policies. Program specific engineers are assigned to the Chief Engineer and respond to his/her direction. This position typically works under limited supervision and direction. Incumbents of this position will regularly exercise discretionary and substantial decision-making authority.

 

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

• Ensures the engineering activities in the business area are managed in accordance with the contract, Cubic policies and procedures, and department standard practices.
• Works cooperatively with other Departments to develop and implement the business area strategic plan.

• Collaborates closely with Business Development and Product Line Management to build and maintain the business area’s product road map. 
• Leads the engineering effort to identify technology and independent research and development (IRAD) needs. 
• Identifies and pursues contract research and development (CRAD) opportunities.
• Reviews plans, technical approach, top level design implementing verification plans, etc., of all programs within the business area to ensure a sound engineering approach to the business area.
• Works to proactively identify and mitigate risks within the business area. Has overall responsibility for engineering performance within the business area.
• Participates in engineering change boards.
• Mentors Engineers assigned to the business area.
• Provides senior engineering interface to existing and potential customers.
• Chairs engineering review boards and failure review boards on all significant issues within the business area.
• Coordinates business area plans, issues, new business pursuits, etc., with functional management to ensure the department is prepared to successfully execute programs/activities.
• Keeps abreast of new technologies and new techniques and identifies technology development requirements for the Engineering Department

• Participates in proposal strategy sessions and red teams as appropriate.

 

Minimum Job Requirements:

Four-year college degree in electronic, software or mechanical engineering or related technical discipline, plus a minimum of twelve years of related technical or engineering experience including five years. Advanced engineering degree or MBA is desirable. Proven ability to lead cross-functional program teams. Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing, make presentations and conduct negotiations with customers, subcontractors and vendors. Must be able to communicate well and demonstrate the mental agility to work in a project or matrix organization. Ability to work under project deadlines and associated cost and schedule constraints. Must be able to travel as required.

Cubic Pay Range:

$76.86 – $105.69 + benefits.

The Cubic pay range for this job level is a general guideline only and not a guarantee of compensation or salary.
