About This Job
Commerce Bank is an SBA delegated lender with a footprint across the Midwest. Our SBA department works with bankers throughout the bank to educate and support them on all SBA products. We are seeking to add an SBA Advisor to the Commerce Strategies & Lending Products Team.
This role will be primarily responsible for the growth of the SBA and other specialty lending portfolios. This includes training Commercial and Small Business Bankers from all markets on the advantages and positioning and compliance requirements of all Specialty Lending Programs. This position will support loans ranging from approximately $25,000 to $15,000,000.
Expertise will be required across many complex SBA programs, including 7(a) loans, SBA 504 loans and other supported products. The SBA Advisor must be able to leverage knowledge of both operational/compliance and customer application perspectives to communicate the benefits and features of these programs while maintaining program and portfolio integrity.
This role must develop effective working relationships with the Commercial and Small Business Bankers, Credit Administration and Executive Management.
Essential Functions
- Work closely with support teams on viable strategies to grow the Bank's Small Business Administration (SBA) lending program
- Train and coach bankers on the various lending programs offered by the SBA
- Educate bankers to effectively use the various SBA programs to both reduce the Bank's credit exposure and offer customers competitive rates and loan structures
- Collaborate with bankers to assist with customers and/or prospects as an SBA subject matter expert
- Oversee the creation of program checklists and online help resources to be published to the internal resource site
- Initiate the research, identification, and attainment of program prospects
- Qualify new commercial and small business loan requests for the specialty lending programs
- Prepare loan and servicing approval decisions through the SBA delegated status on behalf of the US SBA
- Partner with management in the ongoing oversight of specialty lending credits to ensure compliance with program requirements
- Facilitate communication of changes to program requirements and efforts to the frontline
- Advocate for use of the SBA programs at industry events as both a participant and a speaker to reach more prospects and clients throughout the Bank's footprint
- Represent Commerce in the community connecting with, and advocating for, small and midsized businesses
- Perform other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required
- Strong knowledge of the SBA and its lending programs
- Strong analytical thinking skills with the ability to apply discretion and sound judgement to identify and solve problems efficiently and effectively
- Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of the company, clearly expressing ideas and concepts both verbally and in writing
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to operate in a fast-paced, time-sensitive environment
- Ability to understand complex loan transactions
- Ability to maintain a valid driver's license and meet Commerce Bank's driving record criteria; ongoing employment may be contingent upon meeting all driving requirements
- Inquisitive, agile, and strong team player with excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
- Ability to remain adaptable and resilient to all situations with an optimistic outlook and cast a positive shadow that is aligned with our culture and Core Values
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
Experience & Education
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience required. Master's degree in Business preferred.
- 5+ years commercial loan experience required
- 2+ years experience in B2B sales with a focus in small business or business banking preferred
- 1+ year credit underwriting experience preferred
- Experience with Salesforce.com preferred
