Position Summary:
This is a unique opportunity to join Illumina's Consumables and Assay Development team at the frontier of innovation in next-generation sequencing. We are looking for a Scientist 1/2 with experience in genomics, chemistry, molecular biology, and/or biochemistry to join our team. As a Scientist 1/2 at Illumina, you will work in a dynamic, team-oriented environment, creating novel molecular biology tools for the preparation of samples for analysis on Illumina sequencing platforms. Through integration of molecular biology and sequencing chemistry, you will be supporting the development of new assay and analysis tools used in the leading edge of genomics with the opportunity to help change the practice of health care.
Responsibilities:
- Assist in the development of new and existing materials and methods for Illumina's sample preparation platforms.
- Significant hands-on work in the laboratory followed by analysis and documentation of results.
- Design, execute, and analyze experiments under general direction of a supervisor as part of a collaborative, productive team.
- Use of standard molecular biology techniques, e.g. PCR, qPCR, DNA purification and quantification.
- Recognize potential problems, understand and troubleshoot assays and work to resolve any issues to minimize impact on success of project.
- Optimize complex assays to achieve commercial levels of stability and performance.
- Help plan and execute verification and validation studies.
- Write experimental protocols and reports

Requirements:
- Highly motivated individual with the proven ability to think creatively to solve challenging technical problems effectively and efficiently
- Good knowledge of standard molecular biology/nucleic acid-based protocols for both DNA and RNA
- Experience with statistics, Statistical Process Control and DOE techniques is desired
- Sound laboratory skills required.
- Solid skills in document writing; development of reports, plans, work instructions, etc.
- Ability to work independently as well as in a team setting
- Detail-oriented, organized, ability to implement protocols and keep good notes in a lab notebook.
- Ability to handle hazardous and biohazardous materials including human blood products
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- A desire to be part of fast paced dynamic development environment.
Desirable, but not required:
- Strong background in NGS technology and data analysis tools
- Experience working in Pre-PCR and Biosafety Level 2 laboratory environments desired
- Expertise in bioinformatic approaches for analysis of large data sets
- Expertise in proteomics
- Experience and working knowledge of product development process
- Knowledge of quality systems (e.g. ISO 13485)
- Deep understanding of ILMN's library prep portfolio
Experience/Education:
- Typically requires a Bachelor's degree in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics or related field and a minimum of 4 years of related experience; or an advanced degree without experience; or equivalent work experience.
The estimated base salary range for the Scientist role based in the United States of America is: $60,500 - $90,700. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable salary range may be updated accordingly. Compensation decisions are dependent on several factors including, but not limited to, an individual's qualifications, location where the role is to be performed, internal equity, and alignment with market data. Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package.
