A scrum master helps oversee the scrum and development team. They are knowledgeable in Agile methodology and are able to educate others. They need to be able to think fast to help solve problems. Communication skills are critical and leadership skills are a must.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The responsibilities of this role include but are not limited to:
- Lead the scrum team in using Agile methodology and scrum practices
- Moving approved and prioritized work quickly and efficiently through the team
- Responsible for ensuring Scrum is understood and the team adheres to Scrum theory, practice, and guidelines
- Clearing obstacles and establishing an environment where the team can be effective
- Helping the product owner and development team to achieve customer satisfaction
- Lead the scrum and development teams in self-organization
- Remove impediments
- Resolve conflicts and issues that occur
- Help the scrum team achieve higher levels of scrum maturity
- Guides the scrum team on how to use Agile practices and principles to deliver high quality products and services to our customers.
- Resolves team impediments with other Scrum Masters to increase the effectiveness of the application of Scrum in the organization
- Works with Agile coaches and other Scrum Masters to grow within the role
- Contributes to the advancement and improvement of Agile practices within the organization
- Facilitates and supports all scrum events: Sprint Planning, Daily Scrum, Sprint Review, and Sprint Retrospective.
Qualifications
- Able to build a trusting and safe environment where problems can be raised without fear of blame, retribution, or being judged, with an emphasis of problem solving
- Prior experience on a scrum team
- Ability to analyze and think quickly to resolve conflict
- Guiding the team on how to get the most out of self-organization
- Removing impediments or guiding the team to remove impediments by finding the right personnel to remove the impediment
- Facilitating discussion, decision making, and conflict resolution
- Assisting with internal and external communication and improving transparency
- Supporting and educating the Product Owner, especially with respect to grooming and maintaining the product backlog
- Knowledgeable in techniques to fill in gaps in the scrum
- Ability to determine what is scrum and what is not
- Experience with successful Agile techniques
- Ability to work with and lead a team
- Strong communication, interpersonal and mentoring skills
- Ability to adapt to a changing environment
- Self-motivation and ability to stay focused in the middle of distraction
- Project Management experience highly desired
Experience and Education
- Experience playing the Scrum Master role for at least two years for a software development team that was diligently applying Scrum principles, practices
- Good skills and knowledge of servant leadership, facilitation, situational awareness, conflict resolution, continual improvement, empowerment, and increasing transparency
- Knowledge of numerous well documented patterns and techniques for filling in the intentional gaps left in the Scrum approach (example: numerous Burndown techniques, numerous Retrospective formats, handling bugs, etc)
- Preferred Skills/Experience
- Scrum Master certification (CSP, PSM II) is a plus
- Project Management experience (PMI) is a plus
- Bachelor's Degree
