Qualifications

Typing Proficiency: This position requires the skills of a qualified typist. In addition to meeting the experience and/or education requirements, you must be able to type at least 40 words per minute.

To qualify for this position at the GS-6 grade level, you must meet the following: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in Federal service (GS-5) with responsibilities close to the work of this position that has given you the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to independently perform the duties of a Secretary (OA). Specialized experience is experience gained providing secretarial and/or administrative support performing duties such as: preparing in final format memoranda, letters, meeting notes, and other documents; maintaining logs and files; scheduling appointments, coordinating meetings, and preparing travel requests; maintaining calendars and schedules for staff; monitoring, maintaining, and reporting time and attendance for an office/service; and experience using automated software applications such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point and Access). NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month & year starting and ending dates AND hours worked per week.

To qualify for this position at the GS-7 grade level, you must meet the following: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in Federal service (GS-6) with responsibilities close to the work of this position that has given you the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to independently perform the duties of a Secretary (OA). Specialized experience includes working as an executive secretary or secretary to senior management performing the following: maintaining an executive appointment calendar; screening calls and office visitors; drafting a range of executive communication/correspondence utilizing Microsoft applications; scheduling diverse and complex appointments and meetings; coordinating travel and conference schedules; and working closely with executive management and support staff. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month & year starting and ending dates AND hours worked per week.

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Requirements: The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking, standing, bending, carrying of light items such as papers, books, small parts, or driving an automobile, etc. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
