Senior Accountant - Accounting and Financial Reporting
Job Description
What you can expect as a Senior Accountant - Accounting and Financial Reporting:
- Accounting position within the Financial Reporting team of the Corporate Accounting Division. Preparation and analysis of internal and external financial statements, footnotes and related analytical reports. Utilize technology and drive projects in support of team objectives. Work in a positive, professional and collaborative fashion with employees at all levels across the organization.
- Apply extensive knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) with an emphasis on insurance-based concepts to research and resolve various accounting and reporting issues.
- Accountable for timely and accurate completion of components of the monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements and footnotes of the Sammons Financial Group (SFG) member companies.
- Prepare, analyze and/or review settlement schedules and journal entries for reinsurance treaties. Participate in review and analysis of potential new treaties or treaty amendments. Support reinsurance audits.
- Prepare journal entries to support the financial reporting functions, reconcile account balances to supporting documentation and review other account reconciliations done by the team.
- Produce various analytical reports, research items or trends that are unusual and communicate findings to leadership.
- Coach, mentor and motivate the activities of other Accountants. Shadow Company values and professionalism with the understanding that this role is a representation of the Corporate Accounting division.
- Coordinate with and support external auditors and regulatory examiners in areas of responsibility applicable to the external audits and exams.
- Apply knowledge of the SFG entities, business units, chart of accounts, profit centers, hierarchies, processes and controls in order to effectively implement changes in the organization that impact Financial Reporting.
- Apply knowledge of SFG technology platforms or new technology in order to effectively implement changes in the organization that impact Financial Reporting.
- Accountable for the preparation and analysis of components of statutory and GAAP financial plans.
- Communicate professionally, collaboratively and effectively with areas inside and outside of Corporate Accounting to identify and implement projects that impact Financial Reporting.
- Support the Financial Reporting team in special assignments and projects as deemed necessary to meet departmental goals.
- Maintain written procedural documentation for all assigned tasks and adhere to written processes and procedures in support of the required internal controls.
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with key stakeholders across the organization including several geographic locations.
- The workload may occasionally demand additional work outside of the company's standard 40-hour work week.

What we are looking for:
- Bachelor's Degree Accounting required
- Master's Degree preferred
- Minimum 5 years' insurance accounting or public accounting applicable experience preferred
- Effective written and verbal communication skills; ability to work with individuals outside of Corporate Accounting
- Effective analytical and critical thinking skills and a professional judgement disposition
- Ability to work independently to resolve complex issues with limited guidance
- Collaborative team skills within and outside of Corporate Accounting and the ability to work in a positive fashion toward common organization goals
- Ability to prioritize and reprioritize as necessary multiple projects and allocate time as business needs dictate
- Demonstrates professionalism, motivation and intellectual curiosity
- Ability to adapt to change and learn quickly
- Desire to attain or further insurance-industry specific accounting and finance skills
- Demonstrates effective use of Microsoft Office and company specific software applications
- Working knowledge of insurance industry specific GAAP and statutory accounting concepts
- Working knowledge of insurance products
