Job Description

The primary role of the Senior Accountant, Financial Reporting (GAAP) is to perform monthly, quarterly and annual finance close and financial reporting processes for all Coverys entities, with specific emphasis on US GAAP basis accounting and reporting. This position is responsible for the timely and accurate preparation of financial reports and statements; the preparation of journal entries, account reconciliations and various other tasks as directed by the Assistant Controller or Controller.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Responsible for recording monthly journal entries related to insurance operations and corporate consolidation of non-insurance operations, including reconciliation and analysis of assigned accounts.
  • Responsible for the monthly Workday allocations and equity pick-up tasks. Validate Workday created investment in subsidiaries and adjust as needed.
  • Maintain monthly stand-alone financial statements for each entity to ensure accuracy and completeness of appropriate accounts and balances in accordance with GAAP guidance.
  • Responsible for the timely preparation of quarterly and annual consolidated GAAP basis financial statements, supported by other members of finance team. Assist with the preparation of quarterly Board of Directors financial package, quarterly and annual NAIC financial statements and the year-end audited statutory basis financial statements.
  • Coordinates with external advisors, including valuation specialists to support purchase accounting and goodwill impairment analyses.
  • Assist with financial audits and regulatory examinations. This includes interaction with the external audit team.
  • Familiarity with insurance accounting and reporting topics (premiums and commission, paid and outstanding losses, assumed/ceded reinsurance, etc.)
  • Keeps current with changes in statutory and GAAP accounting requirements. Assists with the development of accounting policy memos and implementation of accounting policies resulting from newly formed or acquired entities, and for changes in accounting principles.
  • Participate in daily status meetings and work towards fast and hard set deadlines. This includes maintaining an up to date completion log in BlackLine.
  • Draft policies and procedures that contribute towards strengthening the internal control and accounting environment.
  • Work in a process improvement environment with focus on documenting procedures to perform for tasks assigned and providing feedback for improvements based on experience and knowledge.

Education, Experience, Competencies & Values

  • Bachelor's degree or higher with a concentration in Accounting.
  • 6+ years related accounting and reporting experience in the property & casualty insurance industry.
  • Professional finance and accounting designations are a plus.
  • Proficiency in NAIC statutory insurance accounting principles and procedures and generally accepted accounting principles is required.
  • Experienced with general ledger and other accounting information systems. Workday and BlackLine experience preferred.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel knowledge and proficient with other Microsoft Office applications is required.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and meet deadlines.
  • Strong analytical, business writing, verbal & interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail with a high level of accuracy and consistency in both preparing and reviewing work.
  • Ability to actively participate in team development and team-oriented processes and motivate others to do the same.
  • Positive and professional demeanor. Ability to work courteously and enthusiastically with various internal and external parties.
  • Self-motivation and the ability to work in a fast paced, forward moving environment.
  • Excellent time management and prioritization skills.

Salary Range is $65,000-$88,000. Individual compensation packages are based on a variety of factors that are unique to each candidate including location, skill set, experience, qualifications and education.
