We are AE Studio, a bootstrapped software and data science consulting business. Our mission has always been to reroute our profits directly into building technologies that have the promise of dramatically enhancing human agency, like Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI). We also donate 5% of our revenue directly to effective charities. Today, we are ~150 programmers, product designers, and ML engineers; we are profitable and growing. We also have a team of top neuroscientists and data scientists with significant experience in developing ML solutions for leading BCI companies, and we are now leveraging our technical experience and learnings in these domains to assemble an alignment team dedicated to exploring neglected alignment research directions that draw on our expertise in BCI, data science, and machine learning.

Position Overview:

We are seeking a Senior Alignment Researcher to join and advise our ambitious team. This role involves leading and contributing to groundbreaking research in AI alignment, with a focus on developing strategies and methodologies to ensure the safe and ethical implementation of artificial intelligence. The ideal candidate will be at the forefront of AI alignment research, pushing the boundaries of what's possible in AI alignment.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead and conduct high-quality research in AI alignment, focusing on novel and neglected approaches.
• Collaborate closely with the CEO and leadership team in setting research agendas, ensuring we pursue the most impactful work.
• Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to ambitiously accelerate alignment research.
• Play a pivotal role in sifting through and prioritizing a multitude of ideas and projects, contributing to decision-making processes at the highest level.
• Publish and present research findings in top-tier journals and conferences.
• Guide and mentor junior researchers and team members.
• Work closely with AE Studio’s Project Success team to guide and manage AI alignment projects.
• Stay abreast of the latest developments in AI alignment and related fields.
• Contribute to the broader AI alignment community through collaboration, knowledge sharing, and public engagement.

Qualifications:

• PhD in Computer Science, AI, Machine Learning, Neuroscience, or a related field.
• Demonstrated expertise in AI alignment or related areas.
• Strong publication record in relevant academic journals and conferences.
• Experience in leading research projects and teams.
• Software development experience. Ideally with Python, git, and common machine learning libraries.
• Excellent analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
• Strong communication and collaboration abilities, including comfort working with startup structures and entrepreneurial executives.
• Not afraid to try new things.
• Passion for AI alignment and ethical considerations in technology.
