Senior Applied Scientist
Job Description
Remote within OR, WA, ID or UT
Cambia Health Solutions is working to create a seamless and frictionless health care experience for consumers nationwide. This presents a unique challenge and opportunity for innovative solutions that serve patients and providers and influence the healthcare system. Machine Learning Scientists on the AI team build, prototype, and deploy data-driven models and algorithms to production systems, advancing the state-of-the-art in healthcare. Our work helps improve the health quality of millions and delivers more equitable, effective, and affordable health care to our members.
The ML team is looking for a senior member to join us and help advance our current and future work applying machine learning, deep learning, and NLP to deliver better health care. We solve a wide range of challenging problems, for example:
- How to identify those members whose health will benefit most from outreach and services.
- How to lower our plan members' claim costs.
- How to better understand and answer our members' and providers' most pressing questions and concerns.
- How to reduce friction and increase operational efficiency for members and providers.
- How to do ensure our AI solutions are unbiased and fair, and lead to equitable outcomes for all.
These technical challenges afford us the unique opportunity to draw from and develop a wide variety of tools and approaches. We are passionate about discovering novel data sources, generating datasets and features, designing experiments to test hypotheses, learning from the work of others to maximize creative algorithm and model-building, developing metrics to evaluate performance, and, of course, collaborating with our business partners to ensure our work is valuable. We are never bored!
The ideal candidate for this role will share a passion for all things machine learning and have extensive hands-on experience with developing models for production systems. They will have an expert understanding of ML, both classic ML and deep learning, and will have deep experience with ML processes, development lifecycle, and mathematical underpinnings. An understanding of model explainability, including its limitations and nuances, is crucial. Because this role will help develop a general framework for detection and mitigation of algorithmic bias, a strong appreciation of its potential pitfalls is essential. You should demonstrate expert-level ability in a python-based development environment in which you will be responsible for data extraction and manipulation, iterative model development and evaluation, and documentation and communication of results. An important part of this role will involve technical leadership and mentoring of junior ML Scientists. It's also critical to be able to formulate clear ML solutions from vague business requirements. Know that as a team, we are committed to providing the support, tools, and platforms to help our team members be as productive and successful as possible.
