Senior Audio Engineer, Criminal

Criminal Productions is looking for a full-time Senior Audio Engineer to join our team. As Senior Audio Engineer, you will work closely with the Criminal team to craft episodes of our shows (Criminal, This is Love and Phoebe Reads a Mystery) into immersive and compelling audio narratives. The Senior Audio Engineer will work closely with colleagues in a very collaborative environment, and will assist the team with recording and technical questions as they arise. We’re looking for someone who is passionate about audio excellence, is a flexible team player, and is able to meet deadlines and stay organized in the process.

Criminal is one of the most-listened to podcasts in the United States, and has been called “the thinking person’s true crime podcast.” Founded in 2014, Criminal has been awarded numerous documentary prizes and has been praised by the ACLU of New York, the New York Times, and by the Prime Minister of New Zealand, Jacinda Ardern. 

In 2018, the Criminal team launched This is Love. Time Magazine says, “The podcast tries to decode the mystery of how our romances, obsessions, and relationships drive us. Listening to it can feel like a contact high.”

• Mix and master episodes of the podcasts Criminal and This is Love. Occasionally mix and master episodes of Phoebe Reads a Mystery, as well as audio promos, bonus episodes and other projects as they arise. 
• QC and publish episodes.
• Advise and assist Criminal team members on questions related to Pro Tools, field recording methods, studio bookings and more, and help troubleshoot when issues arise. 
• Lead technical tests related to remote studios and remote recordings. 
• Maintain the Criminal Productions archive. 
• Work with other Vox teams (marketing, ad operations, technical support) when needed.
• Develop and maintain audio best practices and standards by working closely with producers and other recording and mix engineers who work on our shows. This includes maintaining Pro Tools templates and creating documentation on standard operating procedures.

The ideal candidate has 5+ years of experience recording, editing and mixing sound for podcasts - preferably narrative, non-fiction podcasts. We’re looking for someone who has a passion for excellence in audio, high level ProTools skills, demonstrated experience with technical problem solving, nimbleness and flexibility when it comes to editing, and strong interpersonal and communication skills. You meet deadlines and have excellent organizational skills. You’re happy to receive and incorporate feedback in edits (sometimes multiple rounds of edits); you listen carefully to mixes and bring your creative thoughts to the editorial team; you’re ready to jump in and assist teammates with technical issues as they arise
