Senior Automation Engineer

Position Summary:

Orbital is currently seeking an experienced Senior Automation Engineer to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for implementing, managing and running robust automation solutions that integrate scientific instrumentation, robotic automation, and laboratory data management. In this role, the candidate will work closely with scientific teams to build automated robotic systems for high throughput process development and analytical testing, and to increase the efficiency and reproducibility of our RNA platforms.

As an expert in evaluating, recommending, and implementing automation solutions, the qualified individual must have a proven record of understanding, implementing, troubleshooting, and optimizing processes in an industry setting. This role requires a highly collaborative and agile team-first mindset, as well as the ability to adapt to changing needs.

Responsibilities:

• Develop, implement, and run lab automation solutions to improve outcomes and increase efficiency.
• Lead integration of lab automation solutions from requirements gathering to launch and scale-up.
• Identify new opportunities to improve current solutions and contribute to innovation culture.
• Participate in complex, integrated projects and maintain automation hardware and software.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams and contribute to vendor selection process.

Qualifications:

• B.S. or M.S. (5+ years) in Bio/Chemical Engineering or a closely related field. Ph.D. (2+ years) is a plus.
• Must have experience in automation engineering.
• Experience managing technology initiatives and designing/ implementing laboratory automation solutions.
• Strong understanding of cell & molecular biology and end-to-end laboratory system workflows.
• Expertise in systems engineering principles to expand automation capabilities, including 3D printing, tube handling, etc.
• Proficient with Python (or similar) and experience with Hamilton automated liquid handlers and Biosero's Green Button Go scheduling software.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and work in cross-functional teams.
• Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
• Meticulous, independent, and able to manage several projects concurrently.
• Experience with GxP quality regulations preferred.
