Senior Backend Engineer - Payments Platform

This role places you at the core of a high-performance payments platform where backend systems directly impact financial reliability, transaction accuracy, and platform uptime. You will design and own critical services that power payment flows, reconciliation, and event-driven processing in a fast-moving fintech environment. Working in a small, high-ownership engineering team, you will be responsible for building resilient Node.js-based systems that handle real-world financial complexity at scale. The environment is intense, production-focused, and deeply technical, requiring strong accountability and precision. You will collaborate closely with product, DevOps, and business stakeholders while also occasionally engaging directly with customers. This is a role for engineers who thrive in ownership-heavy environments where reliability and speed matter equally.

You will be responsible for designing, building, and maintaining the backend systems that power mission-critical payment workflows and financial operations.

• Build and maintain production-grade Node.js services and REST APIs with a strong focus on reliability, versioning, and scalability
• Own end-to-end ACH payment flows including debits, credits, retries, failure recovery, reconciliation, and virtual ledger integrity
• Design and operate event-driven architectures using AWS services such as SQS, Lambda, API Gateway, and webhooks for asynchronous processing
• Develop robust PostgreSQL schemas supporting complex financial transactions with strict data consistency and integrity requirements
• Contribute to CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and deployment workflows to ensure safe and confident releases
• Support operational needs by building internal tools and React-based dashboards when required
• Produce clear technical documentation including design specs, runbooks, and scalability planning materials
• Participate in customer-facing technical discussions to support integrations and troubleshoot live production issues

Requirements

The ideal candidate brings deep backend expertise with strong experience in distributed systems, APIs, and production-grade fintech environments.

• 6–7+ years of backend engineering experience with strong focus on server-side development
• Strong expertise in Node.js and REST API design in production environments
• Advanced PostgreSQL knowledge including schema design, optimization, and transactional integrity
• Hands-on experience with AWS services such as Lambda, RDS, SQS, API Gateway, and Secrets Manager
• Experience designing event-driven systems including queues, retries, idempotency, and webhook processing
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and automated deployment workflows
• Strong understanding of API documentation standards such as OpenAPI/Swagger
• Excellent communication skills with ability to collaborate across engineering, product, QA, and business teams
• Strong ownership mindset with end-to-end accountability for production systems
