This role will adjudicate reinsurance claims of highly complex coverages such as Property and Casualty claims and support reinsurance audits and projects. Key responsibilities include claim investigation & valuation, coverage analysis & interpretation (including case law analysis), pro-active management of defense counsel, coordination of defense efforts with co-carriers, and engaging outside counsel (coverage) when required. The role requires good analytical and communication skills, with the ability to make decisions and recommendations in a timely and result oriented manner.

How You Will Make an Impact:
- Working under limited technical direction and within broad limits and authority, conducts investigations of claims, potentially with a significant impact on departmental results, performs analysis of coverage, liability, and damages, with a focus on resolving claims in a timely and cost-effective manner. Determines whether claims should be settled or litigated.
- Investigates claims promptly and thoroughly, with particular attention to the review of lawsuits and related facts in order to assess whether coverage is triggered. For litigated matters, includes coordination of discovery efforts with defense counsel, as well as overall litigation and settlement strategy.
- Solving difficult problems that requires an understanding of a broader set of issues.
- Evaluates applicable case law and coverage under applicable policies for reported claims to determine whether coverage exists and the extent/scope of coverage obligations. Keeps management informed of any questions, concerns, or potential issues regarding coverage.
- Settles straightforward claims in line with authority limits and seeks settlement authority from management when required. Evaluates all settlement recommendations from defense counsel, participates in related discussions and offers input on settlement negotiation strategies.
- Identifies opportunities for cost sharing with other carriers and ensures existing cost share arrangements remain appropriate, while working with and engaging co-carriers in a collaborative manner.
- Prepares periodic loss reports, recommends and monitors appropriate reserve levels, and ensures timely issuance of disbursements.
- Manages diary and work-flow tasks in a proactive manner, to ensure timeliness of communications to insureds, brokers, and other interested parties. Includes prompt attention to invoices and information which may have a financial impact.
- Applies problem solving and analytical skills to develop creative solutions which result in the best financial outcome.
- May be responsible for special claims projects, policy search efforts, and historical account/claim reviews (i.e., erosion of aggregate limits).
What We Need:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university required. Two or more insurance designations or four additional years of related experience adjudicating claims beyond the minimum experience required above may be substituted in lieu of a degree.
- A specialized knowledge of commercial claims typically achieved through: A minimum of five years experience adjudicating commercial claims.
- Experience managing asbestos, environmental liability and other types of toxic tort and legacy claims.
- Must have good business acumen (i.e. understand how an insurance company works and makes money, including how this role impacts both Argo Group and our customer's ability to be profitable).
- Technical expertise related to CGL policies, claims resolutions skills and knowledge of insurance and claims settlement principles, practices and procedures.
- Must have good communication, negotiation and presentation skills, and the ability to effectively interact with all levels of the company's internal and external business partners.
- Demonstrates an understanding of mechanisms available for resolving claims settlement disputes (e.g. arbitration and mediation) and when these are used.
- Ability to regularly exercise discretion and independent judgment with respect to matters of significance. This role primarily faces problems and issues that are generalized and typically not complex, but require an understanding of a broader set of issues.
- Demonstrates sound analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects and tasks.
- Exhibits natural and intellectual curiosity in order to consistently explore and consider all options and is not governed by conventional thinking. Uses creativity to resolve unique and challenging business problems.
- Knows how claims reserving techniques are used and how to assess whether a claim reserve is appropriate.
- Demonstrates inner strength. Has the courage to do the right thing and demonstrates it on a daily basis.
- Proficient in MS Office Suite and other business-related software.
- Must demonstrate a desire for continued professional development through continuing education and self-development opportunities.
- Licensed Claims Examiner (Based on state) Must be licensed or have ability to quickly obtain a license in each jurisdiction requiring a license to adjudicate first party claims. within 120 Days
