Senior Cloud Engineer

DESCRIPTION:

The Senior Cloud Engineer will work independently to architect and design secure, highly available and redundant cloud environments and infrastructure on public cloud and Software as a Service offerings. The incumbent will be tasked with leading complex work efforts and working with business units and development teams to analyze requirements and recommend appropriate technical approaches and alternatives. The incumbent's success in these tasks directly affects the performance and reliability of internal and external applications and services used by APA staff, members and general public.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

• BS/BA (Masters Preferred) in Computer Science/Engineering or related discipline and 5-8 years' experience in a related IT position.
• Additional years successful experience can be substituted as an equivalent for educational requirements.

COMPUTER SKILLS:

The Senior Cloud Engineer will focus on architecting, designing and developing technology infrastructure solutions in cloud environments to support applications and continuous delivery and continuous integration processes. Successful candidates will have deep expertise in these fields and an obsessive focus on automation and building repeatable solutions. They will have worked in AWS environments leveraging services beyond basic IaaS provisioning.

AWS and other technology certifications (Professional level preferred) will be given preference

• Deep knowledge of cloud technologies (primarily AWS)
• Experience with serverless applications (AWS Lambda etc.).
• Experience with Docker containers and orchestration platforms such as AWS ECS or Kubernetes
• Multi-cloud experience a plus
• Strong experience with scripting (NodeJS, Python, PowerShell and/or Unix shell) tools
• Experience with Git or other source control.
• In depth experience with CI/CD tools (Jenkins, Cloudbees etc.)
• Experience with Infrastructure as Code and/or Infrastructure automation using Cloudformation or other tools
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Proficiency with network/security/provisioning tasks relating to public/multi and hybrid cloud environment
• Ability to integrate multiple on-prem and cloud services using scripting and automation
• Knowledge of web technologies and ability to interface with application development and operations teams with a demonstrated commitment to their success
• Strong working knowledge of Linux and Windows (sysadmin experience a plus)
• Good understanding of database technologies including AWS implementations in RDS
• Strong understanding of AWS data analytics services such as Kinesis, Glue, EMR etc.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• One of the primary responsibilities for the Senior Cloud Engineer is to independently work to translate application development requirements into cloud based infrastructure. Propose forward thinking technical solutions based on current and future technology vision for ITS Operations.
• Design, plan, implement, support, and maintain APA public cloud (primarily AWS) environments. Integrate on-prem and public cloud infrastructures so they operate in a seamless fashion.
• The Senior Cloud Engineer works closely with application development staff on new and existing projects that require cloud interaction. Manages cloud environments to provide high availability/continuous operation as required.
• Ensure that security is incorporated as one of the main pillars in designing any infrastructure for application environments
• Mentor and assist technical staff members in any technical project work and ensure that effective knowledge transfer is done across the team
• Develops and maintains standards, procedures, methodologies for effective operation, access, and controls backup recovery of all assigned cloud environments.
• Coordinates all support related issues for cloud environments. Coordinates cloud security requirements including training, user guidelines, and access authorizations.
• Develops and maintains documentation and procedural standards relating to all assigned cloud environments and projects.
• The Senior Cloud Engineer works with developers when modifications to appropriate development and production systems are required. The Cloud DevOps Engineer ensures assigned cloud systems conform to the established ITS standards. Participates in product evaluations and vendor negotiations.
