About American Express Cloud Engineering:
American Express Cloud Engineering provides a comprehensive platform that enables business critical applications to have Faster Time-to-Market for American Express. Cloud Engineering offers dynamic rapid code-to-development models and services such as Platform-as-a-Service, Infrastructure-as-a-Service, DB-as-a-Service, Analytics-as-a-Service, Messaging-as-a-Service, CICD Pipelines, etc. for application developers in a hybrid cloud environment. Cloud Engineering enables Application developers to write modern scalable cloud native applications.
American Express is embarking on an exciting Hybrid Cloud transformation journey and is in search of an innovative and critical thinking engineers to build our Hybrid Cloud Platform. This position is part of the xPaaS Services Cloud Engineering team.
In this Senior Engineering Manager role, you will be responsible for leading a talented team of Colleagues and Contractors who are responsible for building scalable, secure, and highly available Cloud based Services such as Redis, Kafka, Elastic, Aerospike, Cassandra, Spark, GridGain, Chaos Testing platform with self service automation capabilities, all within our Hybrid based extended platform-as-a-service (xPaaS).
Your primary responsibilities will be to manage and lead the development of Cloud Services to enhance the developer capabilities available within our American Express Hybrid Cloud platform, with a focus on people leadership. Driving and improving Level 3 engineering support and customer consultancy for all the team's services make up the additional responsibilities of this role.
Responsibilities Include:
Technical Leadership
- Building highly available Cloud Services that will be consumed by applications running in our Hybrid Cloud based PaaS environment.
- With your Deep understanding of xPaaS Services and the underlying Cloud platforms, you will have an emphasis on driving highly available and scalable services using both Open Sourced and vendor provided products.
- You are a subject matter guide of two or more of the following; Redis, Kafka, Elastic, Aerospike, Spark, GridGain, Cassandra
- You are a subject matter expert on our Public Cloud integration and services for AWS, GCP and Azure
- Having a deep understanding of Cloud Principles and container based platforms like Docker, Kubernetes, and Redhat Openshift to support our customer's use of Cloud Services.
- Using hands-on experience of an automation tool-chain, specifically ansible or Terraform.
Leadership
- People Leader to xPaaS Engineering scrum teams, including B30 colleagues and contractors, dotted line leadership to B35 colleagues in scrum team(s)
- Promote, empower, and practice servant-leadership
- Drives the team's technical improvements and roadmap
- Takes accountability for the technical maturity of the team
- Mentor and guide team members to success; identify strengths and areas for growth in direct reports and guides them to grow in their careers while being more productive on the team
- Nurture an environment of continuous engineering improvement through mentoring, feedback, and metrics
- Working with Engineering Director to hire top talent for the team
Are you up for the challenge?
- Overall 10+ years of Technology industry experience with 3-5 Years of meaningful engineering experience
- Demonstrated professional expertise in a large Fortune 100 company running an IT Production Operation at scale including Infrastructure (Servers, Network, Storage, Security) and deployment of highly available Applications (Distributed, Middleware, Databases across all tiers)
- Experience working within an Agile led team for rapid and continuous development of work products
- Expertise in Cloud Services at a very large scale with high availability and Disaster Recovery implementations
- Strong knowledge of virtualization management in VMware
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or equivalent work experience
- Passion for People Leadership, engineering mentorship and team growth
- Passion for learning new technologies, particularly in the cloud computing infrastructure area.
- Hybrid (private to public) cloud integration experience and certifications are highly preferred
