Job Description

OVERVIEW

A thriving, mission-driven multimedia organization, NPR produces award-winning news, information, and music programming in partnership with hundreds of independent public radio stations across the nation. The NPR audience values information, creativity, curiosity, and social responsibility – and our employees do too. We are innovators and leaders in diverse fields, from journalism and digital media to IT and development. Every day, our employees and member stations touch the lives of millions worldwide.

Across our organization, we’re building a workplace where collaboration is essential, diverse voices are heard, and inclusion is the key to our success. We are committed to doing the right thing in our journalism and in every role at NPR. This means that integrity, adherence to our ethical standards, and compliance with legal obligations are fundamental responsibilities for every employee at NPR.

INTRO TO POSITION
NPR’s Washington Desk covers the White House, Congress, the Supreme Court, the Justice Department and electoral politics. We value original reporting, insightful analysis and explanatory journalism. We’re known for our work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit, and our stories often lead NPR’s broadcast shows and NPR.org. We also produce a popular daily podcast, The NPR Politics Podcast, on our desk.

This Washington Desk editor will lead and edit the team covering Congress for NPR’s broadcast and digital platforms. On any given day, the Hill reporters are juggling multiple news and feature stories, and this editor will play a key role in shaping their stories and interacting with the network’s shows and digital platforms on their behalf. This editor will also work closely with the rest of the desk’s editing team and help decide what the desk’s reporters publish for digital, and when, and communicate those decisions across the network.
The job requires attention to detail, big picture thinking and concern about craft. The editor must have excellent news judgment and the ability to work collaboratively -- but also have the confidence to work independently. This editor should have experience and a passion for covering political and policy news. A premium will be placed on candidates with digital editing experience.

This is a union represented role covered under the terms of a collective bargaining agreement with SAG-AFTRA.
