About the Company

At Torc, we have always believed that autonomous vehicle technology will transform how we travel, move freight, and do business.

A leader in autonomous driving since 2007, Torc has spent over a decade commercializing our solutions with experienced partners. Now a part of the Daimler family, we are focused solely on developing software for automated trucks to transform how the world moves freight.

Join us and catapult your career with the company that helped pioneer autonomous technology, and the first AV software company with the vision to partner directly with a truck manufacturer.

What you'll do:

As our Regulatory & Safety Senior Counsel, you will serve as a member of the legal team and a subject matter expert for fleet safety, product safety and regulatory compliance, working closely with the SVP, Safety and Regulatory, senior leadership and the broader engineering, product development and fleet management teams to translate legal regulations into operational and product safety, with appropriate levels of risk mitigation while maintaining a laser focus on delivering safe, compliant, and customer-focused products that will win in the marketplace. Responsibilities include building relationships across the business and being highly engaged in day-to-day business operations, proactively providing legal advice related to regulatory compliance and risk in the areas of product safety, fleet operational safety, insurance, and risk. Must also promote safety as a core value across all areas of the Company’s business. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Collaborate and advise product & engineering teams on questions related to a wide variety of issues arising from compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws related to autonomous trucks.
  • Advise the Torc Safety Board (TSB) on safety, risk, and technical compliance topics, including assisting with identification, investigation, documentation, and resolution of internal safety concerns.
  • Provide high quality, pragmatic legal and business advice regarding a wide range of general product development, safety, and consumer protection issues.
  • Serve as Co-Chair of the Legal and Regulatory and Safety Committee (LARS), which analyzes, inspects, and assesses safety and quality questions and initiatives, engaging with internal and external subject matter experts as necessary, to properly inform and advise on safety matters.
  • Provide legal advice and counsel to all teams responsible for supporting the product safety case, including on how to adhere to all laws, regulations, and relevant safety standards (ISO, SAE, AVSC, FMVSS, etc.).
  • Work with the SVP of Safety & Regulatory to shape and influence the required modifications of global vehicle safety regulations to accommodate the certification of ADS-equipped vehicles as well as emerging ADS technical and homologation regulatory requirements in relevant markets, including through interaction with key stakeholders and peers throughout the industry.
  • Provide training on relevant laws and regulatory changes that impact Torc’s business.

What you’ll need to Succeed:

  • At least 8 years of broad regulatory and product safety experience.
  • Juris Doctorate degree and a member in good standing of a state bar with ability to gain full admission or admission as Corporate Counsel in Virginia or Texas (preferred).
  • Experience working proactively with a wide variety of stakeholders to develop and implement processes, procedures, and organizational improvements.
  • Thorough working knowledge of federal and state government laws and regulations related to motor vehicles and trucking, including DOT, FMCSA, FMVSS, and NHTSA.
  • Experience working directly and proactively with regulators to resolve regulatory issues and influence regulatory policy.
