Department Summary

MITRE's Offensive Operations & Effects department, part of the Cyber Operations & Effects Innovation Center, enables offensive cyber operations by applying software and hardware techniques and solutions. Our evaluations, rapid prototypes, and tools development provide unprecedented capabilities designed to be applied to real-world missions. Our experts provide cyber capabilities including support to offensive operations, reverse engineering, and forensics, while drawing on other expertise as required for specific missions or adversaries.

Offensive Operations focus areas include signature reduction, cyber/EW convergence, cyber deception, adversary emulation, managed attribution, and special communications. Reverse engineering focus areas include engaging in Mobile, embedded, and IoT reverse engineering, capability development, and vulnerability exploitation.

Roles and responsibilities

MITRE is seeking strong technical candidates with a computer science, software engineering or related background to join a research and development team focused on investigating new technologies and building prototypes.

The ideal candidate would be proficient in at least one of the following disciplines: offensive Cyber tool development, reverse engineering, vulnerability research, embedded countermeasures, Cyber/EW convergence, RF jamming, geolocation, offensive Cyber tradecraft, Cyber Effects development and/or Cyber denial and deception. In addition, you will be responsible for;

• Reverse engineering of mobile and embedded devices
• Development of offensive tools
• Research on vulnerabilities for exploitation purposes
• Investigate the convergence of autonomy, AI, and ML and offensive operations
• Support to outward-reaching sponsors
• Develop prototypes based on research
• Work independently to learn new technologies, languages and platforms

Basic Qualifications:

• Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 6 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD with 3 years' experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience
• Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field
• Must be US citizen capable of obtaining and maintaining a Secret security clearance
• Experience with programming in languages such as Python, Java, C++, or C
• Experience with foundational communications or signal processing concepts
• Familiarity with operational Cyber concepts and objectives
• Knowledge of software vulnerabilities and exploitation

Preferred Qualifications:

• Familiarity with ARM platforms such as Android and/or iOS
• Strong familiarity with reverse engineering obfuscated or binary files
• Familiarity with network forensics, pcap analysis
• Familiarity with Linux; comfortable on the command line
• Familiarity with database systems (e.g., MySQL, Postgres, SQLite)
• Strong familiarity with mobile app programming languages and scripting tools. (e.g., Java, Objective-C, Swift, Python, C, C++, Go)
• Familiarity with RF concepts
