Senior Data Scientist

Why it matters: This Senior Data Scientist will be key in providing deeper insights, enabling data-informed decision-making, and building data-powered products by leveraging machine learning and AI. In this role, you will work within a cross-functional team to drive forward data initiatives across mission-critical Axios products.

Go deeper: As a Senior Data Scientist you will make an impact on Axios through the following responsibilities:

• Working closely with Product Managers to develop machine learning and AI-powered data products
• Develop, deploy, monitor, validate, and govern models used in production applications
• Apply natural language processing techniques to a wide range of business problems
• Identify opportunities to implement new techniques and technologies
• Extending Python libraries used for advanced analytics and machine learning
• Remaining up to date on the new and state-of-the-art applications of machine learning and AI

• Highly collaborative and comfortable working on a remote 1st distributed team
• Self-motivated with high attention to detail, ability to think critically and problem-solve
• Ability to learn new technologies and experience delivering on a wide range of data science projects 
• Highly analytical with solid experience in analysis, math, and statistics
• Proven experience as a data scientist
• Experience applying appropriate analytical methods and experimental design (training models, feature development, regression testing)
• Understanding of NLP techniques for text representation and semantic extraction 
• Experience leveraging LLM and generative AI technologies 
• Excellent programming skills in Python/SQL
• Comfortable with Jupyter Notebooks, and experience with machine learning frameworks, Python libraries (like scikit-learn, HuggingFace) and GPU-accelerated computing
• Ability to write robust and testable code
• Excellent communication skills

• Experience working in and around AWS data services
• Experience working with cross-functional data teams and with Data Engineers, Analysis, and Product Managers
• Experience working in Media
• Familiarity with MLOps

Starting salary for this role is in the range of $165,000 - $180,000 and is dependent on numerous factors, including but not limited to location, work experience, and skills. This range does not include other compensation benefits.
