The Role:

We are transforming technology and creating a digital evolution that will empower Centene to better serve our members. As a Senior Database Reliability Engineer (DBRE), in partnership with core DBA teams, you will be responsible for the availability, reliability, and performance of Centene's database systems. Senior DBREs specialize in database systems and ensure their health by applying a blend of sound engineering principles, operational discipline, and mature development and automation standards.

Position Purpose:

Responsible for building innovation in the areas of distributed system flow and resilience, and continuous feedback and delivery. Creating efficiency and cultural transformation through the curation of new systems and capabilities.

Responsibilities:

Lead and mentor teammates and DBA peers in database reliability practices.

Respond to critical incidents and outages in partnership with database SMEs.

Facilitate and lead postmortems on critical incidents and outages, relentlessly looking for answers that will prevent the next incident.

Build and maintain effective observability tools with a focus on the customer experience.

Identify automation opportunities & improve internal processes to reduce toil.

Assess new and existing database systems for opportunities that improve reliability, performance, or availability.

Plan for database system capacity demands and provide scaling solutions.

Lead and participate in database projects with a focus on the customer experience.

Required Skills:

Advanced knowledge of database internals and data structures.

Ability to troubleshoot complex database problems.

Experience supporting enterprise scale, mission critical database systems in a 24x7x365 environment.

Programming: SQL, PL/SQL, Python, Bash, PowerShell, etc.

Ability to lead conversations and drive collaboration.

Strong communication with peers, customers, and senior leaders.

Capacity to quickly understand how something works.

Additional Preferred Skills:

Multi-vendor RDBMS experience (Oracle, MSSQL, Postgres, MySQL, etc).

Database tools/features (Oracle RAC/Dataguard/GoldenGate, Microsoft SSIS/SSRS/AlwaysOn).

Cloud database offerings (OCI, Azure, AWS, etc).

Engineered Systems (Exadata, Greenplum).

Configuration/deployment tools (Ansible, GITLAB CI, etc).

Advanced monitoring tools (Splunk, Dynatrace, OEM, PEM, etc).

Additionally you will bring:

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems Management, Engineering or related field or equivalent experience. 5+ years of experience in the field or in a related area. Experience with software engineering, enterprise operations support, object oriented programming, automation, consulting with internal customers, cloud based enterprise-grade cloud systems management and full stack engineering. Ability to quickly learn technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, Ansible, Puppet, Nginx, HAProxy, Elasticsearch, MariaDB, GoLang and Python.
