Senior Design Systems Engineer

We're seeking a senior design systems engineer to join our design system team. The design system team makes the tools used to deliver cohesive experiences in our advisor desktop, client portal, and home office platforms.
On this team, you can expect to collaborate on high-value, high-visibility projects that empower the rest of Northwestern Mutual's engineering teams to ship consistent, accessible, and responsive products efficiently.
Responsibilities:
On any given day, you can expect to:

• Contribute to the constellation of libraries, tools, and artifacts that comprise the Luna system
• Collaborate with visual designers to create, document, and express composable UI elements in multiple environments (Figma, HTML/CSS, React, mobile native) by leveraging system foundations and patterns
• Maintain and create CI/CD pipelines and script the build process we use to publish and deploy our tooling
• Write visual regression, unit, and integration tests to ensure system stability
• Document and evangelize best practices for markup semantics, accessibility, responsiveness, React architecture, and general design system component usage
• Provide support to consuming engineering teams.
• Partner with external teams to create shared tools and library integrations
• Create and perform code reviews & API proposals for your peers

Qualifications:

• Excellent written/spoken communication skills
• An open, proactively collaborative attitude
• A systematic approach to problem-solving
• Proficiency in semantic, responsive, cross-browser, HTML/CSS

• Understanding of WAI-ARIA authoring practices
• Ability to devise straightforward API choices given complex and parallel use-cases
• Knowledgeable in advanced React patterns such as Context, controlled/uncontrolled behavior, Hooks, and state management
• Proficient in JavaScript, especially manipulating and operating on data structures
• Comfortable working in the browser ecosystem, including concepts like the DOM and the CSS cascade
• Proficient with Git and the Command Line
• Track record collaborating directly with designers and non-tech partners
• Visual design concepts such as typography, color, spacing, shape & form

Big ++'s:

• Experience with contributing to OSS
• Experience writing NPM tooling
• Have experimented with SVG
• Familiar with Markdown, Semantic Versioning, Conventional Commits, etc.
• Experience maintaining CI/CD pipelines
• Experience using design tokens
• Proficiency with Sass, Tailwind CSS or Styled Components
• Deeply proficient in at least one: React, Web Components

Pay Range - Start:
$115,150.00
Pay Range - End:
$213,850.00
