Job Description

The Senior Director of the Technology Development Business Unit (TDBU) provides top-level comprehensive leadership for over 150 employee-owners focused on the design, development, fabrication, and delivery of hardware and software solutions. In this challenging and rewarding position, the Senior Director will help shape the future of Torch's solutions line of business by identifying, capturing, managing, and delivering compelling hardware and software solutions programs. The Senior Director also plays a significant role in shaping and executing major Internal Research and Development (IR&D) programs. The Senior Director of the TDBU operates the company's Technology Integration and Prototyping Center (TIPC) building complex which houses 80,000 square feet of corporate research laboratories, secure laboratories, high bays, and fabrication shops. The TIPC facilities are AS9100D and ISO14001 certified.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Growth and development of the Business Unit is a primary responsibility. The applicant will participate in the company annual strategic planning process which includes development of the TDBU Business Plan and a multi-year TDBU P&L forecast. Develop business case analyses and forecast future IR&D and capital investments necessary to achieve strategic goals.
  • Identify and capture complex hardware and software design, development, integration, prototyping, and fabrication opportunities for state-of-the-art systems. This involves developing and maintaining strong relationships with both Government and industry customers (e.g., OEMs), including and bidding and negotiating program details. Develop competitive advantages by deploying IR&D resources, working with the team to craft compelling proposals, and devising competitive price-to-win strategies for new business.
  • Establish relationships and collaborate with strategic partners (e.g., customers, suppliers, universities, national laboratories, etc.) to identify and apply state-of-the-art technologies to Torch's services and solutions offerings.
  • Oversee the Business Unit as a corporate P&L organization by setting and achieving revenue and profit goals, managing overhead expenses, and ensuring programs are executed on-budget and on-schedule. Oversee the Business Unit's diverse contract portfolio consisting of multiple contract types (i.e., T&M, CPFF, FFP), direct labor, ODCs, and subcontractors. Strategically position the company to re-win contracts and collaborate with other Business Units and organizations across the company to achieve new contract wins for both their organizations and in the TDBU.
  • Provide inspirational leadership by developing and carrying out a strategic vision for the Business Unit which is in alignment with corporate goals, communicating those plans and goals to employees, and coaching employees to achieve success. As a senior leader within the company, practice leadership by example by consistently demonstrating the company's core values of: Innovation; Cooperation; Expertise; Customer Focus; Excellence; Integrity; and Reliability.
  • Devise and implement a workforce development program which identifies and matures high-potential internal candidates for future technical and management leadership positions within the company. Develop and maintain a succession plan for the organization.
  • Foster an organizational culture of employee ownership and compliance with regulatory (e.g., FAR, DFARS, etc.), quality (AS9100D), and environmental (ISO14001) standards through effective training, communications, recognition, and employee engagement activities.
  • Safety of our employee-owners, visitors, and customers is a top priority. Foster and maintain a safety program compliant with OSHA standards through a strong training and employee engagement.

Job Requirements

  • B.S. Degree in an engineering, science, or other technical discipline from an accredited university. A graduate degree in an engineering, science, or technical discipline is desired. We will consider candidates with a B.S. in Business Administration or Management who have substantial experience leading similar highly technical organizations.
  • Demonstrated experience leading highly technical teams and programs of increasing size and complexity. Applicants should possess a strong working knowledge of advanced technology areas and their application to DoD customer needs. Technology areas include Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML); autonomous or robotic systems; data fusion; EO/IR and RF sensing, RF communications and networking, command and control systems, space systems, unmanned aerial systems, and virtual training systems.
  • Demonstrated experience with electrical, mechanical, and optical product integration, prototyping, testing, demonstration, and manufacturing to include machining and fabrication of complex components. Applicants should have experience managing prototyping and fabrication projects in compliance with a robust and efficient AS9100D quality management system.
  • Demonstrated experience developing proposals, winning, and executing a broad range of contract types (e.g., T&M, CPFF, fixed price, etc.) for defense-related programs. Applicants should have a working knowledge of the FAR and DFARS along with experience recognizing and avoiding potential OCI. Experience should also include use of Other Transaction Authority (OTA) arrangements, Broad Agency Announcements (BAA), and other contracting mechanisms. The applicant should have familiarity with the Huntsville-based DoD market, hardware and software related business expansion opportunities, and a strong track record of capturing new business in the area.
  • Demonstrated experience leading a corporate P&L organization and efficient management of overhead resources. Applicants should possess experience forecasting and providing business case analyses for potential IR&D investments, capital investments, and leading critical project make/buy decisions which led to beneficial outcomes for the organization.
  • Demonstrated experience with customer interfacing, customer issue resolution, and employee issue resolution.
  • Eligible to obtain a Top-Secret security clearance.
Desired Requirements
  • Experience with environmental (e.g., ISO14001) and safety (e.g., OSHA) standards and implementation of environmental and safety programs.
  • Experience collaborating with universities, national laboratories, and strategic partners to identify and apply state-of-the-art technologies to customer problems.
  • Experience developing and executing highly compelling IR&D programs which increase the company's competitiveness with a high potential of return on investment.
  • Demonstrated experience in creating and sustaining new hardware/software product business lines and familiarity with other markets including but not necessarily limited to: AFRL, USAF ALCs, NAVAIR, NAVSEA, DARPA, DHS, NASA, and/or the intelligence community.
  • Active Top-Secret security clearance.
