Job Description
Education and Experience Required
- Doctoral degree in psychology in a professional psychology subfield
- Minimum of 10-15 years experience related to continuing professional development in psychology, postgraduate career development, and/or specialties and specialization in professional psychology
- Familiarity with regulatory processes/quality assurance programs, direct involvement in the administration of such is desirable
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; excellent interpersonal skills to manage tensions associated with different perspectives, conflicts associated with regulation and policy development; excellent policy analysis skills
- Senior level management skills including strategic planning, fiscal, administrative, and personnel management
- Demonstrated leadership skills
- Evidence of national recognition and reputation within psychology communities
Responsibilities
- Directs the daily operations of the Office of CE Sponsor Approval. Serves as contact person for approved sponsors and those seeking approval; answers questions, provides consultation and discusses all aspects of the sponsor approval process. This includes questions about policies and procedures as well as questions regarding program content. Manages the review of approximately 500 applications per year and the annual review reports of approved sponsors, monitors compliance with criteria, notifies sponsors of criteria violations, and consults with sponsoring organizations to bring them into compliance with APA standards. Facilitates resolution of complaints filed against APA-approved sponsors and management of appeals. Continually evaluates legal risk related to adverse decision and complaints and consults with the Office of General Counsel on a regular basis to ensure actions by APA are implemented in a way to mitigate risk to the association. Responsible for ensuring revenue such that this unit is self-supporting.
- Governance relations - Continuing Education Committee: provides professional staff support and policy guidance. Oversees preparation of agendas for committee meetings, writing of minutes and reports; develops and implements new services and systems. Coordinates and takes leadership in the development of educational programming involving the committee, implements program activities as directed by the committee, serves as the primary liaison to APA ad hoc groups and external groups that involve continuing education, coordinates presentations of the committee to other governance groups, coordinates meetings of subcommittees of the CEC and undertakes projects as directed by the subcommittees. Develops, in collaboration with the Senior Director Office of Continuing Education in Psychology, policy and research recommendations to the committee. Keeps abreast of research and relevant policy nationally as relates to continuing education in the health professions. Communicates with other liaisons and informs the committee of APA and other relevant groups about issues that impact continuing education.
- Governance relations - the APA Commission for the Recognition of Specialties and Subspecialties in Professional Psychology (CRSSPP): provides professional staff support and policy guidance. Oversees preparation of agendas for committee meetings, writing of the minutes and reports. Coordinates and takes leadership in the development of convention or other events involving the commission, implements program activities as directed by the commission, serves as liaison to APA ad hoc groups that have relevance to the work of CRSSPP. Keeps abreast of research and relevant policy and informs the committee of such. Provides consultation to applicants on the petition preparation process. Develops governance items for this commission that reports to the Board of Directors and is required to request council approval of any petition recommended for approval.
- Provides direct supervision of one full-time position that in turn supervisors three direct reports, directs workflow, prepares and conducts and provides input on performance appraisals. Provides oversight of administrative functions of the Office of Continuing Education Sponsor Approval and CRSSPP, including management of revenues and expenditures.
- Serves as the APA staff liaison to the Council of Specialties (COS). Provides professional staff support and policy guidance. Oversees and provides support for COS meetings. Represents the association and CRSSPP in program activities and events. Provides leadership in the development of events involving CRSSPP, COS, and other relevant stakeholders. Keeps abreast of research and relevant policy nationally as relates to specialties and subspecialties. Communicates with other liaisons and informs COS about issues impacting specialties and subspecialties.
