Network Systems Group at Fastly is responsible for building reliable, cost-effective, and low-latency systems to connect Fastly with end-users and customer infrastructures. We design the overall network architecture, the hardware that makes up our infrastructure and develop all the software components that intelligently moves traffic in and out of our servers. Â
We are looking for a Senior Director of Engineering who can lead the teams responsible for building the systems that control and optimize our network infrastructure. The group consists of a broad set of expertise including traffic engineering, kernel and data path and near real-time large scale telemetry processing. The role is expected to manage ICs, managers and managers of managers.Â
What You'll Do:
- Manage the engineering teams responsible for Fastlyâs network telemetry, kernel, control and optimization to constantly improve performance of our network for the customers
- Builds clear and concise timelines across multiple functional areas
- Engage with customer interactions to properly influence the roadmap and have tight feedback based on how engineering projects impact customer experience
- Balances short term needs with long term strategic deliverables
- Work with key partners across Fastly (e.g. Network Operations group, Office of the CTO, Chief Architect and Product Management) to drive innovation into the product strategy and translate the strategy into the technical components of the productÂ
- Lead overall software architecture of the group ensuring that the applications continue to be well designed, resilient and performant making sure the best practices are applied to projects inside your org as well as sharing the knowledge with other engineering teams
- Guide the design and implementation of related software components
- Coach engineers in the team on design, architecture, development, quality, and career development to drive a high performing team
- Resource planning and execution including active participation in cross-functional project and product discussions
- Lead an expanding distributed team by being directly responsible for recruiting, hiring and retaining individual contributors and managers
- Establish continuous improvement with the teams to drive both safety and speed
What We're Looking For:Â
- You have a minimum of 5 years of experience leading teams and building distributed systems
- You have at least 10 years of engineering experience, specifically working on distributed systems
- Ability to lead and execute effectively with a distributed team
- Ability to guide, nurture, and support a strong engineering culture
- Comfort guiding teams to craft high quality, maintainable code
- Excellence in collaboration and communication with a variety of technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Ability to build diverse and inclusive teams
- Engineering management experience or experience leading teams of senior engineersÂ
- Empathy for the users of tools and systems produced by your teams
- Significant experience in software engineering
- Capable of designing metrics, iterating on measurement, and motivating change
Weâll be super impressed if you have experience in any of these:Â
- Prior experience in solving large-scale system problems with novel innovations
- Operational hands on experience to understand the nuances of deploying software at global scale
- Experience engineering multi-tenant systems
Work Hours:
This position will require you to be available during core business hours.Â

Fastly currently embraces a largely hybrid model for most roles which allows employees flexibility to split their time between the office and home.Â
Salary:
The estimated salary range for this position is $226,330 to $282,910.
Starting salary may vary based on permissible, non-discriminatory factors such as experience, skills, qualifications, and location.
This role may be eligible to participate in Fastlyâs equity and discretionary bonus programs.
