Medica's Senior Director of Expense Management has overall responsibility for the accurate budgeting, reporting and analysis of administrative expense for the entire organization. This includes both operational expenses and capital expenses related to the project portfolio managed by the Strategic Prioritization Committee (SPC) and Operations Performance Committee (OPC).

Key Leadership Accountabilities:

  • Develops and leads an administrative expense reporting package for senior leadership and establishes a cadence for reviewing and addressing spending variances with the executive group. Prepares monthly schedules, forecasts, actual to expected analysis, and risks and opportunities.
  • Leads and coordinates the annual budget process for administrative expenses. Solicits and considers input on assumptions and expected spend from leadership and key contributors across the organization. Incorporates the impact of strategic initiatives.
  • Supports prioritized deployment of company resources via the SPC. Works with functional areas to review business cases on all planned projects. Documents decisions made in the committee and captures the impact for consideration in future budget cycles.
  • Ensures departments across the company manage administrative expense spending to established budgets in order to achieve overall company spending goals. Participates in Position Approval Committee (PAC) to support decisions around all staff and consultant hires.
  • Provides leadership to and accountability for the performance of staff and oversees day-to-day team responsibilities and prioritizes work, ensuring that staff have adequate tools and resources to successfully complete responsibilities.

This Senior Director will work as part of a collaborative team and will have the opportunity to drive and create improved structures to support budgeting and expense management processes while working closely with Medica's executive leadership team to manage administrative expenses to an affordable level.

This position is a Hub role, which requires an employee to occasionally come onsite to the designated office - Minnetonka, MN, Madison, WI or Omaha, NE - for applicable heads-up work. Frequency is determined by business need as decided by leadership.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related degree; equivalent combination of education and work experience will also be considered
  • 10+ years of related work experience as it relates to enterprise-level expense management, Financial Analysis and/or Accounting leadership
  • 5+ years of people leadership experience
  • Knowledge of health insurance marketplace preferred
  • Demonstrated experience with administrative expense management, control and oversight
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience working on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Experience in budgeting, forecasting and the development of financial needs
  • CPA Licensure preferred

  • Proven business acumen and effectively prioritizes work and decisions based on strong foundational knowledge of accounting and finance practices, reporting and standards
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with senior leaders from multiple business lines. Collaborate in the evaluation of budget impacts for new and existing expense requests and can apply financial discipline and guidance
  • Is an effective steward of a diverse and lean budget and able to analyze requests and influence decisions
  • Is an effective and flexible communicator and works well with a range of process or product stakeholders at multiple levels of the organization
  • Team leadership skills with an ability to coach, mentor and develop team members
