Job Description

Lime is the world's largest shared electric vehicle company. We’re on a mission to build a future where transportation is shared, affordable and carbon-free. Our electric bikes and scooters have powered 400+ million rides in 250+ cities on 5 continents, replacing an estimated 100+ million car trips. Named a Time 100 Most Influential Company and Fast Company Brand That Matters, we achieved a fully profitable year in 2022, becoming the first in our industry to reach this milestone.

At Lime, we differentiate ourselves by designing and developing our vehicles in-house and manufacturing them to our exacting standards. Our hardware is the best in the industry and outperforms our competitors where it counts the most - in safety, reliability, performance, and total cost of ownership. Our engineers constantly learn from the tens of thousands of rides we provide daily across the globe. Our close relationship with our riders feeds our passion to deliver the best rider experience in the industry and inspires our team to innovate continuously.

As Senior Director, Hardware Engineering you will deliver one of Lime's key competitive strengths - designing and developing our industry's best vehicles and hardware. You will lead our industrial design, engineering, and reliability teams based in the USA, China, and Poland. You are a seasoned engineering executive who thrives in scrappy, smart, fast-paced environments. You have a strong track record of building high-performance teams across multiple cultures and geographies. You have a comprehensive systems engineering background and can roll up your sleeves to go deep into multiple disciplines to drive product architecture, make design decisions, and solve problems related to IoT, motor control, Lithium-ion batteries, and custom mechanical part development. You are a curious, data-driven, hands-on engineering leader who knows how to launch products that can successfully scale in manufacturing and achieve exacting product quality, cost, and reliability objectives.

What You'll Do:

  • Develop, retain, inspire, and lead a high-performance global hardware engineering team that continues to develop the industry’s best hardware - now and in the future.
  • Provide subject matter expertise and thought leadership to shape and influence future roadmaps, technology investments, partnerships, and product plans.
  • Influence and collaborate cross-functionally with key stakeholders, including Product management, strategic sourcing, and operations leadership.
  • Create and execute an organizational plan focused on building our core capabilities to deliver our new product roadmap while improving our existing fleet's safety, reliability, operating costs, and performance.
  • Engage and support all aspects of the product life cycle (concept, development, integration, qualification, manufacturing, delivery, acceptance, and field performance, and end-of life).
  • Partner with product management and operations to discover, prioritize and execute initiatives that continuously improve the performance of our 260,000+ vehicle fleet.
  • Ensure that our engineering tools, systems, and global engineering processes enable world-class outcomes in execution excellence.
  • Manage, track and ensure the timely execution of all engineering projects. Establish objectives, specifications, schedules, budgets, resource plans, and contingency plans to ensure effective execution.
  • Provide clear and timely communication to keep stakeholders informed on all key initiatives, projects, and escalations.

About You:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in engineering & 12+ years of experience working in hardware engineering, with progressive responsibility and expansion and at least six years of experience managing system-level hardware development teams for consumer electronics, automotive, or electric vehicle businesses.
  • Strong track record building high-performance cross-functional teams across borders, languages, and cultures.
  • Strong track record attracting, assessing, and developing world-class talent. People love working for you, and you can explain why. You identify outstanding talent and continuously raise the bar on performance with explicit mechanisms for measuring performance.
  • Customer-obsessed, lead by example, expertise creating an engineering culture that obsesses about customer experience, continuous improvement, and execution excellence.
  • High EQ, transparent, humble, communicative, collaborative leadership style. Strong bias for action. The best idea wins, no matter where it comes from.
  • Effective communicator with strong interpersonal skills and people instincts, resulting in an ability to quickly establish trust and credibility with a diverse, global team.
  • Extensive experience developing, launching, and supporting successful products from NPI to EOL.
  • Multidisciplinary expertise, including industrial design, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and system-level electronics architecture and design.
  • Track record building highly effective partnerships and strategic relationships with key suppliers.
  • Experience in manufacturing, familiarity with factory environments, and a solid understanding of fabrication technologies and methods (molding, forging, extrusion, CNC, welding, etc.). Knowledge/experience in PCBA manufacturing is also a plus. Automotive, consumer electronics, and electric vehicle experience desired

The anticipated salary range for this position is $176,000 to $297,000. Equity and benefits may be provided as part of the compensation package, depending on the position offered. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's skills, experience and other qualifications as well as the candidate's location of residence. In addition to base salary, some roles may be eligible for a variable bonus based on a combination of company performance, employee performance, and management discretion.
