Vertex currently operates at the forefront of rare disease scientific innovation and has successfully developed and commercialized multiple breakthrough medicines for Cystic Fibrosis (CF), Sickle Cell Disease and Transfusion-Dependent Beta Thalassemia. In addition to clinical development programs in CF, Vertex has more than a dozen ongoing research programs focused on the underlying mechanisms of other serious diseases including programs in Pain, Type 1 diabetes, IgA Nephropathy (IgAN), APOL-1 Mediated Kidney Disease, and Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, among others.

The Senior Director of Market Access Strategy (povetacicept and inaxaplin(AMKD)) is accountable for leading and overseeing the development of Market Access go to market strategies, tactical support programs and overall execution of access resources across all payer channels for the commercialization of two launch brands (POVE – IgAN and AMKD). This role requires a significant degree of collaboration, influencing and driving strategic alignment across multiple functions (Account Management, Trade, Pricing & Contracting, US Public Affairs, HEOR, New Product Planning, Global Value & Access Strategy (GVAS), and Marketing). The SD of MAS POVE/AMKD will spearhead value proposition and PIE message development and will build out the MAS POVE/AMKD team, securing agency support and gather insights and conduct market research to define strategy.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the value narrative and the payer value proposition and PIE development in tandem with HEOR
  • Spearhead the Market Access launch readiness teams to ensure all USMA functional areas are aligned to strategy and all tactical elements of the program are ready upon FDA approval
  • Lead and support initiatives to understand, analyze and demonstrate the clinical, economic, and societal value of products to payers, decision-makers, and influencers
  • Identify and address key product barriers to access and performance by applying advanced understanding of and experience with contracting and pricing strategies, payer analytics, and payer market trends
  • Develop pre-launch strategy and tactics in coordination with global market access and NA new products teams plus the POVE/AMKD BU leadership teams
  • Provide critical leadership in developing brand and market access strategies by payer channel, to support patient access for povetacicept via the creation and delivery of impactful market access resources
  • Coach/player mindset to build and lead a team (5 direct reports) to ensure all strategies and tactics are well thought through and aligned to overarching brand strategy
  • Will play a critical leadership role within the Business Unit leadership teams representing all Market Access functions
  • Accountable for annual LRP process and full-USMA brand planning for both POVE and AMKD
  • Refinement and execution of the go to market access strategy to compete in a dynamic external landscape
  • Oversee initiatives to understand, analyze and demonstrate the clinical, economic, and societal value to formulary decision makers based on FDAMA114 guidelines (aka Pre-approval Information Exchanges)
  • Spearhead and evaluate pricing and contracting strategies in tandem with the MA leadership team and GVAS
  • Develop, train, and implement the necessary promotional resources and reimbursement pull-through that support field account teams’ efforts with key customers
  • Chair the ACCESS process across the cross-functional business partners
  • Customize strategies based on Commercial, Medicaid & Medicare demographics, legislation, & trends
  • Identify and address key product barriers to payer access and performance by applying advanced payer analytics and market trends
  • Secure and oversee agency and external vendors to deliver resources and strategic insights on time and within budget
  • Developing KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) and metrics to assess impact of key initiatives
  • Function as a trusted, subject matter expert on US payer landscape to internal colleagues and externally customers

Knowledge and Skills:

  • General experience in commercialization and drug / diagnostic development
  • Expert knowledge of US healthcare system, including gov’t & commercial payers, policy, and regulatory environment
  • Strong understanding of specialty pharmacy coupled with knowledge related to lab services
  • Previous contract strategy leadership experience in the pharmaceutical/biotech or healthcare industry
  • Experience in developing and articulating a clear and pragmatic value proposition
  • Proven track record of meeting or exceeding objectives & goals, both as an individual and as part of a team
  • Excellent communication skills with experience presenting to customers and internal leadership
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully lead cross-functional teams, influencing without direct authority, with the interpersonal skills to foster collaboration and succeed in a highly matrixed environment
  • Ability to perform in a fast-paced environment, manage multiple priorities simultaneously, and work effectively across cross-functional teams
  • Must have product launch experience, companion diagnostic or experience with genotyping reimbursement
  • Preference for candidate with prior, direct disease area experience
  • Experience with leading and managing a team

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field (advanced degree preferred)
  • Typically requires 12 years of experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Typically requires 5 years of supervisory experience
  • Launch and contracting strategy experience preferred

Location: HQ (Boston –Seaport) on a hybrid schedule (3 days a week); relocation available
