The Senior Director of Global Systems Engineering formulates a long-term vision for the Systems Engineering group within the Sleep and Respiratory Care business and manages the capabilities of the department to ensure that business objectives can be met as it pertains to Systems engineering, technology and product development.

The Senior Director of Global Systems Engineering is a people leader with direct responsibility for the development and growth of their teams, is a champion of the Philips Culture and is expected to drive change across the organization. This role drives continuous improvement of systems engineering processes in the team and strives for efficiency and the highest standards of quality in everything the team does. This role has responsibility for a global team of Systems engineers and reports directly to the Head of R&D of the Sleep and Respiratory Care business.

As a member of the R&D Leadership Team, determines in consultation with the Leadership Team, the Global Systems team's objectives, policies, processes and budgets on short and long term, makes sure that the organization can meet the objectives and ensures that the roles and responsibilities are put in place.

You are responsible for
  • Formulates and implements long-term vision/direction/strategy steering the group to add maximum value to the business in the future.
  • Manages capabilities of the department; to develop and maintain a long-term view on the required competences and knowledge to introduce new technology.
  • Ensures that there are adequate resources and tools at the proper time, is responsible for the technology and architecture in the department and is responsible for maintaining and improving the department's knowledge and expertise.
  • Ensures appropriate personnel management practices regarding recruitment and selection, adequate staffing, performance reviews, education and training, and management development policy.
  • Ensures an engaged, innovative, and inspiring working environment in the department by motivating, challenging, and coaching the department's employees towards growth, manages and optimizes the innovative climate, stimulating entrepreneurship and driving engagement.
  • Is co-responsible for achieving operational plans, guides Project Managers/Leaders and ensures the optimal allocation of personnel to the projects and effective project management.
  • Cooperates with relevant parties outside of the department. Works across the borders of own department - e.g. formulate strategies or project proposals across department borders, cooperating with other department heads, programs and the business. Establishes a network with relevant players; scientific relations outside of the department and with the business - on all topics, and actively using this network to obtain input on technological developments, identifying trends and opportunities.
  • Knows the customers well and uses that knowledge in the role.


You are part of

This role has responsibility for a global team concentrated in systems engineering and reports directly to the Head of R&D of the Sleep and Respiratory Care business.

To succeed in this role, you'll need a customer-first attitude and the following
  • Master's degree or equivalent in Engineering and/or business discipline or like experience
  • Minimum 10+ years of relevant experience in a regulated environment, medical/bio preferred
  • Prior experience leading systems engineering teams or alternatively, proven intimate familiarity with systems engineering
  • Able to cooperate in a global matrix organization /multi -site matrixed environment
  • Able to influence activities outside R&D scope e.g. finance, marketing, operation, service
  • Strong demonstrated ability to coach and motivate a team and build strong cultures in line with Philips Behaviors.
  • Expert knowledge of product development for consumer propositions, preferably medical consumer propositions
  • Preferably experience with design for 6 sigma/ Green belt/ Lean/ Agile development
  • Manage stakeholders
  • Deep insight in engineering/ architecture/research
  • Define an innovation strategy
  • Build/ lead global teams
  • Work across industries/ different business
  • Proven ability to manage innovation projects in a business environment, leading several professional teams of different technological areas and countries.
  • Display strong market, content and technology knowledge, as recognized by the business
