We have multiple antennas on-orbit and numerous flight deliverables occurring in 2022. Our missions include Earth Science (weather, surface deformation and change); LEO, GEO and lunar communications; synthetic aperture radar; and unique radio frequency sensors for commercial and government applications. Title: Senior Electrical Engineer

Position Type: Full-Time

Pay Range: $128,000 - $180,000 (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data)

About the Role: 

The Senior Electrical Engineer Engineer that will support a cross-functional team in the design, fabrication, test, and integration of electronics. The cross-functional team could include but is not limited to engineers in the following disciplines: Mechanical, Systems, Reliability, Radiation, Manufacturing, Strength, Thermal, and Test.

We are looking a Senior Electrical that will support one of the following programs:

  • INCUS: NASA has selected Tendeg to deliver four Ka-band deployable antennas for a new Earth science mission called Investigation of Convective Updrafts (INCUS) that will study the behavior of tropical storms and thunderstorms, including their impacts on weather and climate models. https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/nasa-selects-new-mission- to-study-storms-impacts-on-climate-models.
  • SDC: NASA has selected Tendeg to develop a large rectangular aperture deployable antenna for a Surface Deformation and Change mission. Tendeg completed TRL-6 testing of the baseline antenna, which is 7x1.4m and operates at C-band, and is studying a 12x2m configuration at L-band. https://science.nasa.gov/earth-science/decadal-sdc.
  • 2-axis Gimbal Antennas: Tendeg has multiple contracts to develop, fabricate, test and deliver flight units for deployable high gain antennas from X-band to Q/V-band. These are for sensor and communication missions for LEO to lunar applications.

What you will do:

  • Create designs for spaceflight qualification and flight hardware.
  • Develop and execute tests on flight hardware.
  • Apply innovative design techniques to a solve a variety of engineering challenges as the primary source of electrical engineering expertise on multidisciplinary projects.
  • Write detailed design documentation for use by other electrical engineers, other engineering teams, and external customers. Hold formal and informal design reviews with both peers and mentors as needed.
  • Perform worse case analysis for the mission lifetime (e.g., linear/switching analysis, safe operating area analysis, data/telemetry timing, power sequencing, power conversion efficiency, transient analyses, radiation, EMI/EMC assessments, etc.) including electrical stress (derating), and reliability assessments for circuit designs.
  • Develop electrical FMEAs and contributor to multidisciplinary systems FMEAs.
  • Attend design reviews, provide feedback on new designs, and perform some mentoring activities for more entry level engineers.
  • Use a variety of tools to analyze and simulate electrical designs, selecting the best tool for the job as needed.
  • Generate schematics and layouts using an ECAD tool (Altium preferred) and perform basic layout tasks.
  • Work in a fast-paced team environment on both R&D and production projects. Complete tasks with evolving requirements. Demonstrate strong ownership of the design process and an ability to work independently when needed.
  • Debug hardware in a laboratory environment with common lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, power supplies, and multimeters.
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing, Assembly, Test, and other specialized teams as needed to develop high quality, reliable hardware for our customers.
  • Refine the skills needed to develop truly next generation space flight hardware! Learn by doing and learn from senior engineers as you gain experience developing next generation electronics for deployment mechanisms and gimbals.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Key Job Requirements:

  • BS degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, or similar field and 8+ years of experience.
  • 8+ years of hardware design experience. Advanced academic degrees may count toward experience.
  • Strong ability to communicate with other engineers, management, and external customers over both written and verbal communication. This includes formal reports and/or customer facing design reviews.
  • Excellent analytical skills and demonstrable knowledge of electrical engineering.
  • Expert knowledge of modern analog and digital electronics.
  • Expert knowledge of Altium design tools or other similar electronic CAD tools
  • Experience using MATLAB, Python, or other scripting language for scientific computing
  • Experience designing for space environments
  • Experience designing to industry standards such as EEE-INST-002. Experience in motor control, embedded software, or EMI/EMC mitigation techniques are additional desired skills
