ABOUT THE ROLE
Our engineering organization is comprised of three primary departments: Current Product Engineering (CPE), New Product Engineering (NPE) and Product Validation.
The New Product Engineering (NPE) Team is focused on developing the next generation GILLIG products and major upgrades to our existing product line. These efforts focus primarily on:
- Zero-Emission powertrains
- Major quality improvements
- Major cost reduction, maintainability, and product stability improvements
The Senior Vehicle Controls Engineer will be a key member of the New Product Engineering (NPE) Department, responsible for driving the development of the body controller algorithms for all GILLIG vehicles and integrating components from the full range of suppliers. Become part of the team to develop the controls logic for the first in class zero-emission bus. You will research, define, implement, and validate novel controls designs for the next generations of public transit vehicles across every sub-system (electrical, mechanical, and thermal interfaces included). Assignments are broad in scope and highly detailed, requiring outstanding creativity, superior initiative, good judgement, and leadership skills. This is a hands-on position as your work product will be manufactured on-site.
We are looking for a driven and self-starting engineer who will be a key implementation resource for new product releases.
Technical Focus
Vehicle Controls:
The Vehicle Controls team is a key component of both Current Product Engineering (CPE) and New Product Engineering (NPE) Departments, responsible for driving the development of the body controller algorithms for all GILLIG vehicles and integrating all control and software-intensive components from a wide range of suppliers. Core activities involve developing the controls logic, display features and intra-vehicle controller communication functions. This team researches, defines, implements, and validates novel controls designs for the current and next generations of public transit vehicles across every sub-system (electrical, mechanical, and thermal interfaces included). Assignments are broad in scope and highly detailed, requiring outstanding creativity, superior initiative, good judgement, relationship management and leadership skills.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive engineering employment and development
- Comfortable working around low voltage and high voltage systems
- Experienced with:Â
- Software development using PLC ladder logic, C/C++ based microcontrollers, or model-based development including open and closed loop control systems for sensors, actuators, body controllers, ECU's, as well as integration of suppliers black box module
- Control and safety analysis of low voltage and high voltage components such as circuit breakers, relays, wirings, AC-DC and DC-DC converters, traction motors, Li batteries, and high-power chargers, etc
- Diagnosing and troubleshooting electrical and controls systems using a combination of tools simultaneously, such as CANalyzer, P-CAN, Kvaser, CANoe, CANApe, Wireshark, multimeters, oscilloscopes, function generators, and other sensors
- Familiarity with:
- Timing and system architecture issues of microcontrollersÂ
- CAN-Bus, LIN, and Ethernet communication networks and protocols, such as J1939, CANopen, Automotive Ethernet, etc
- MATLAB, Simulink, and State flowchart
- Substantial development experience of heavy-duty automotive safety standards, regulations, and guidelines, such as FMVSS, ADA, APTA Bus Procurement Guidelines, SAE HD vehicle standards, SAE charging standards, NFPA, ISO 26262, Arc Flash, and Manufacturing Safety
- Fluency in 8D, five whys, fishbone process, FMEA/FMEDA to diagnose complex issues
- Project leadership skills
- Ability to lift 25 lbs.
- Regularly required to sit, stand, and walk and occasionally kneel or squat
- Limited travel may be requiredÂ
- Typical start time 6:00AM (negotiable)
EXPECTED COMPENSATION
$75,000 - $275,000/annual salary + premium benefits
Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job classification, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered.
