AES is seeking an engineer to support hardware and software testing of clean energy technologies at our testbeds. This will involve designing tests and test set-ups, writing test protocols, performing tests or coordinating execution of tests with our vendors and research partners, supporting our R&D technician with implementing test set-ups and troubleshooting during tests. The test engineer will also analyze and report data from tests. Testing will include a variety of activities including outdoor testing of advanced solar and energy storage systems as well as hardware-in-the-loop testing of innovative inverter and power plant controls. Tests will support evaluation and qualification of new clean energy technologies that could be used in AES's pipeline as well as pre-site validation of equipment and systems to de-risk AES projects.

The successful candidate will be experienced with testing new technologies and be knowledgeable of hardware-in-the-loop test set-ups. They will be able to distill information about the high-level needs/goals of projects and technologies to craft effective test set-ups and protocols that validate and verify those project goals. They will also enjoy and be effective at hands-on work in the field and/or the laboratory, interested in new technologies and system solutions and passionate about clean energy and decarbonization. They will be organized and able to produce effective analysis of test data and test reports.

The position is located in Louisville, CO.

Key Responsibilities

The key responsibilities for this position will be to:

  • Take high-level project objectives and design test set-ups and test plans that will effectively answer key questions for a project.
  • Design test set-up that includes physical and electrical layout of equipment to be used in the test set-up.
  • Work with testbed partners and/or authorities having jurisdiction (AHJ's) to acquire approval to conduct proposed tests.
  • Oversee vendors and research partners that provide and/or install testbed hardware and software
  • Implement testing and/or coordinate testing with our vendors and research partners.
  • Analyze test data and provide technical reports with results to the broader engineering innovation team.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Candidate must have an BS or MS in a relevant field.
  • 5+ years experience required. Experience in clean energy strongly preferred.
  • Prior experience creating and performing tests and analyzing test data required. Experience with hardware-in-the-loop testing preferred.
  • Strong documentation and technical reporting experience
  • Must be willing to do hands on work in indoor and outdoor environments at our testbeds. Must have experience in hands-on work and be willing to become an electrically qualified worker within AES.
  • Experience working with or at national laboratories is a plus.
  • Experience in power plant design, operations, or commissioning is a plus.

The expected salary for this position, at commencement of employment, is between $115,000 and $140,250/Annual; however, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements such as annual bonus, in addition to a full range of medical, dental, vision, life, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if a candidate receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an "at-will position" and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
