The Senior Opto-Mechanical Engineer - R&D will develop mechanical designs and aid in manufacturing of laser beam delivery hardware for our current and next generation R&D for new technology for Quantum Computers. The successful candidate will have both the technical depth to resolve complex mechanical, materials and manufacturing design issues and the ability to work in an interdisciplinary team to troubleshoot higher level system issues. They must excel in a focused, small-team environment, and have a commitment to high quality prototypes and concepts and a demonstrated record of developing, creating and innovating engineering solutions. A strong sense of shared responsibility and shared reward is required as well as a commitment to high product quality.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Work in a small, cross-functional project team to design, develop and build Optical and mechanical hardware for assemblies integrating opto-mechanics and support structures.
  • Conceptualize and analyze complex mechanical assemblies, create theoretical models, conduct empirical confirmation, and perform computer assisted analysis.
  • Work with optical and engineering teams to integrate design hardware into the quantum computer
  • Provide technical support by generating and/or reviewing bills of materials, building documentation, assembly and test fixtures, test procedures, and driving anomalies and non-conformances to closure.
  • Work across relevant partner teams to gather requirements for a common test infrastructure
  • Own the design of the test infrastructure to support all aspects of testing
  • Interface with system owners to help develop verification strategies
  • Help develop and implement the test design process and associated documentation
  • Help build the tools and processes to expedite validation and verification of future products

You’d be a Good Fit with: 

  • Minimum BS in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, or related engineering or scientific discipline, or equivalent work experience
  • 5+ years developing and testing optical and mechanical designs
  • Experience with optomechanical design, precision machining and design principles
  • Demonstrated experience in developing systems and processes for optical alignment and metrology for optical elements and optical systems preferred
  • Experience with optomechanical solutions in free space and fiber coupling
  • Design for thermal stability/vibration analysis and tolerance analysis
  • A strong mechanical engineering background with fluency in CAD – SolidWorks preferred - and a solid understanding of dimensioning / tolerancing principles.
  • Experience developing test solutions for a characterization/diagnostic test environment
  • Familiar with Product Lifecycle Management documentation control systems

You’d be a Great Fit with:

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical or Optical Engineering or equivalent
  • 8+ years of experience developing verification solutions for complex systems
  • Experience navigating the trade space of new designs between performance, reliability, cost, and manufacturability using DFM techniques.
  • Demonstrated experience leading a design for test campaign through the entire product life cycle
  • Experience building scalable test solutions for hardware

Our HQ is located in College Park, Maryland and we are a 15 minute metro ride from Washington DC. We are actively building out teams in the Washington D.C., Seattle, and Boston metro areas and will want to locate you in one of these geographies.
