About This Job

The main purpose of this job is to collaborate with the Enterprise Architecture program and business data stakeholders to ensure the technical architecture and information ecosystem enables the organization to achieve business outcomes and generate meaningful value from its data assets. The position guides technology choices and strategy for the business data domain and develops policies, practices, and standards to support them. The position partners with business and technical leaders to manage and support technology architectures to ensure their sustainability, fitness for use, and compliance with industry regulations, legal and ethical mandates, and corporate policies. The Senior Data Architect is responsible for discovering & documenting the data and analytics requirements for information for all uses.

Essential Functions

  • Partner with business and technical leadership to provide strategic recommendations that maximize the value of data assets via their creation, access and use
  • Collaborate with IT Architecture, Information Security, and Data Governance stakeholders to define standards and policies for data lifecycle management, data keying strategy, and data obfuscation strategy
  • Monitor and assess the benefits and risks of change impacting the data ecosystem (i.e. new system implementations, deployment of new tools and utilities, etc.) Actively work to mitigate the negative impact of change affecting the use of the data architecture.
  • Provide the organization with a future-state view of the business data landscape that minimizes restriction imposed by proprietary solutions or technologies. Collaborate in the process of architectural planning and Influences decisions on data architectural design.
  • Lead data, analytic, business and IT teams in developing data governance processes and structures
  • Consult with business and technology stakeholders to develop and manage data blueprints and information models (i.e. conceptual models, logical models, physical models, relational database designs, message models and others)
  • Proactively manage the classification and zoning of data assets sourced from systems, applications, and external third party information providers to increase time to value
  • Drive efforts to improve business performance through enterprise information solutions and capabilities, such as master data management (MDM), metadata management, analytics, content management, data integration, and related information management or information infrastructure components
  • Analyze data and analytics security requirements and solutions, and partner with leadership to ensure that enterprise business data and analytics assets are protected
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required

  • Advanced understanding of system integration, including interface design, and familiarity with web-oriented architecture techniques
  • Advanced understanding of data modeling and information classification expertise at the enterprise level and industry-specific knowledge of data security protocols, policies, and regulations
  • Advanced understanding of common information architecture frameworks and information models
  • Strong understanding of metamodels, taxonomies and ontologies, as well as of the challenges of applying structured techniques (data modeling) to less-structured sources
  • Strong understanding of data science concepts, as well as MDM, business intelligence, and data warehouse design and implementation techniques
  • Advanced understanding of a variety of data access and analytics approaches (for example, microservices and event-based architectures)
  • Ability to develop positive relationships across business and technical domains to facilitate activity that produces mutually beneficial outcomes
  • Ability to assess rapidly changing technological trends and developments and apply them to business needs Ability to use business capability models to create an information-centric view to quickly visualize what information matters most to the organization based on the defined business strategy
  • Ability to understand problems from a broad perspective leveraging business and technical knowledge to anticipate the impact of issues and potential solutions
  • Strong business and technological acumen. Possesses the ability to communicate with executives, business domain stakeholders and technical partners alike.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Information Systems, Data Management, Data Science or equivalent combination of education and experience required. Master's degree preferred.
  • 12+ years of experience in IT or related field, with at least 5 years in information system design required
  • Extensive experience designing and implementing information architectures and solutions required
  • Experience with distributed management and analytics in cloud and hybrid environments required
  • 5+ years data analysis experience preferred Strategy and management consulting experience in implementing information solutions preferred
  • Professional training/industry certifications in program management, data science, or PaaS cloud providers (e.g. Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud Platform) preferred

This compensation range is for the Senior Enterprise Data Architect job and contemplates a wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including but not limited to location, skill sets, education, relevant experience and training, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The disclosed range estimate has not been adjusted for any applicable differentials (geographic, bilingual, or shift) that could be associated with the position or where it is filled. At Commerce, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each situation. A reasonable estimate of the current base pay is $113,000 to $135,000 annually. This position will be eligible for additional compensation through performance-based incentive plan(s) that will correspond to meeting performance goals.
