Job Description:

Education:

  • Five (5) year college degree preferred, ideally in Occupational Health and Safety, Health Sciences, Industrial Safety, or engineering, with an emphasis on safety strongly preferred
  • Safety certification(s) related to EHS preferred (examples include CSP/ASP, COSS/COSM, CHMM, and environmental management)

Work Experiences:

  • A minimum of ten (10) years of Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) experience, including managing at a site-specific level, managing a team, managing multiple projects and office locations concurrently. Retail experience preferred.

Skills:

  • Experience in driving incident reduction results through development and implementation of targeted safety and loss prevention strategies and tactics
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, including the ability to interface effectively with individuals at various levels
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of the following:
  • Ergonomic Principles
  • Job Hazard Analysis (JHA)
  • Physical Demand Assessment (PDA)
  • OSHA regulations and NFPA codes and standards
  • HazMat categorization and disposal requirements and regulations
  • High attention to detail
  • Ability to interact and engage with a diverse team of stakeholders across the enterprise, and provide win-win solutions that support advancement of Academy's pro-active safety culture
  • Ability to analyze and independently solve a variety of difficult situations and problems
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and work independently, while also being a team player
  • Effective team leader, able to align direct reports on successfully achieving goals and objectives while also serving as an individual contributor
  • Demonstrated ability to independently determine priorities, juggle multiple projects and meet deadlines
  • Proven ability to organize and, as needed, edit materials produced by a SME; significant abilities in communicating with SMEs
  • High proficiency with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Acceptable level of hearing and vision to perform job duties

Responsibilities:

  • Operate as Academy's principle technical safety resource
  • Lead the creation of HSE goals for business units and appropriate activity-based goals for the leadership teams, functional managers, and front-line supervisors to drive safety culture, compliance, and results
  • Lead efforts to minimize and mitigate risks throughout the organization, including industrial hygiene, safety, environmental, and facilities
  • Develop and manage Academy's processes for HazMat identification, shipping, and disposal
  • Point of contact for governmental inspections and citations, including but not limited to OSHA and fire marshal
  • Manage the daily activities of Academy's safety team
  • Oversight of health and safety programs including occupational heat stress, respiratory protection, hearing conservation, personal protective equipment, Control of Hazardous Energy (LO/TO), electrical and arc flash safety, Process Safety Management, machine guarding, fall protection, confined space and other programs as required
  • Prepare, revise, and update health and safety programs and procedures to meet changes in the organization and regulations
  • Manage, develop, and implement HSE programs and initiatives to meet regulatory requirements and HSE needs
  • Lead efforts to create and maintain a safety culture that leverages team member ownership, involvement, and personal accountability
  • Conduct safety meetings, presentations, and trainings
  • Communicate findings and results of inspections and audits with management and appropriate team member(s)
  • Provide Industrial Hygiene, General Industrial Safety and Ergonomics leadership for multiple locations
  • Lead the implementation and utilization of risk analyses, hazard assessments, and risk prediction processes to ensure effective identification, communication, and mitigation of workplace hazards
  • Lead the effective development of safety policies, procedures, and related documents in accordance with local, state, and federal laws
  • Assess the effects of work environments on team members
  • Identify the nature and location of workplace ergonomic hazards, implement solutions to reduce or eliminate such hazards and evaluate the effectiveness of changes
  • Analyze the interaction between team members and machinery/equipment
  • Identify hazards by observing and interviewing individuals in particular work environments
  • Identify possible improvements and design/implement appropriate solutions
  • Apply applicable best practices and enable improvements to work processes, facilities, equipment, and safe work practices
  • Ensure policies and procedures address the identified ergonomic, health, and safety risks, through monitoring of compliance and tracking of performance with the use of both leading and lagging indicators
  • Develop, draft, edit, standardize, update and implement safety policies, procedures, standards, and programs
  • Ensure that policies and procedures align with regulatory requirements
  • Duties may change; team members may be required to perform other duties as assigned.
