Senior Infrastructure Engineer

Why it Matters: By leveraging your Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) mindset and Infrastructure Engineering expertise, you will play a key role in our mission. You will design, build, and support tools, systems, and workflows that amplify and enable the efforts of fellow engineers. You will help optimize our stack and ultimately make our systems faster, more efficient and secure, and able to support massive volumes of traffic as we continue to launch worthy products into the world.

Go Deeper: In this role, you will make an impact on Axios through the following responsibilities:

• Build standards, patterns, and tools that help engineers in other squads make effective use of infrastructure
• Partner with engineers across application development and data engineering squads to strengthen architectural approaches, improve release pipelines, scale applications, and properly observe and de-risk environment
• Consult with other squads in an SRE capacity
• Configure and manage our software defined networking capabilities including VPCs, firewalls, and routing
• Configure and maintain core shared services like Kubernetes clusters, databases, and CI/CD systems
• Be security-first when designing and evaluating solutions
• Help audit and harden our production monitoring and alerting systems
• Assist in crafting incident management and release coordination processes
• Proactively seek to make systems more efficient, faster and cheaper
• Mentor less experienced members of the team through pair-programming and empathetic code review

The Details: Ideal candidates will embody an entrepreneurial spirit and passion for Axios’ mission. A DevOps mindset and the ability to ensure production performance at scale is the target mix. The following skills are a great fit:

• Experience building and maintaining AWS infrastructure
• Expertise with CI/CD with tooling like CircleCI
• Strong experience with Kubernetes
• The ability to perform security audits, environment hardening, and monitoring for security breaches
• Experience configuring ingress routing and proxies like Traefik
• Experience with monitoring systems like Prometheus, Grafana, and Loki
• Experience writing scripts in languages like Python or Bash
• Experience with IaC tooling like Terraform
• An understanding of business continuity and disaster recovery
• Experience supporting data warehousing environments like AWS Redshift is preferred
• Experience having managed data platforms and products like Hadoop, Amazon EMR, Glue, Kinesis is preferred
• Fast learner with an ability to work collaboratively.

Bonus points if you have any of the following:

• A background supporting Spark and Kafka in production
• Familiarity with security policies such as SOC 2, NIST, and CIS benchmarks
• An understanding of managing AWS Batch compute resources
• Experience having worked in an agile environment
