Senior Interactive Designer/Developer
Job Description

This role will take a leading hand, in concert with the Editor of Interactive News, in pushing the team to make ever-more-beautiful things. We're looking for someone who can contribute both as a peer editor and as an individual, setting the bar high and helping others reach it.
What You'll Do:
- Design and codethe look and feel of pages and applications alongside fellow developers, graphics reporters and other visual journalists. Sometimes, this will be an imaginative visual story display; other times, it'll be a slick product interface.
- Manage our design system.We've figured a few things out - we know our typefaces, our core brand colors, and a small collection of common components. Beyond that, it's the Wild West. You will be responsible for taking our design system the next level, both at a team-wide and per-project level, building visual cohesion while preserving individual creativity.
- Edit and offer design feedback to team members.We're looking to you to help your peers take their work to the next level. You're a player-coach, modeling good practices in your own work but also directly reviewing other projects.
- Manage projects and contribute to our biggest initiatives,including our 2022 election result pages.
- Constantly evaluate the designs you make,using analytics, user experience testing and whatever else can help us make thoughtful decision.
What You'll Need:
- At least five years experience in web design.We want to see how you've creatively solved problems, surprised stakeholders, and otherwise made awesome stuff. We're not too picky about where you've spent your time - product design, story design, it's all good - but we need to see your mastery of the internet as an artistic medium.
- Solid design fundamentals.You care about color. You have opinions on when to use a slab serif typeface versus a semibold sans. You're a nut for information hierarchy.
- Knowledge ofHTML, CSS and JavaScript.Every member of Interactive News touches code at some point, and you'll need to hold your own. We're a React shop, and we'd be thrilled if you have experience coding in that framework.
- An interest in the news.POLITICO is driven by a particular mission: showing our readers who's behind the levers of power, how they're pulling them, and why. It's essential that you care about this.
- A collaborative spirit.This role will work with partners across the newsroom on anything from a single storytelling element to designing a complete interactive experience. If that sounds like fun, we want to talk to you.
