Senior Legal Counsel

GHD has an opportunity for a Senior Legal Counsel operating out GHD's Phoenix, Arizona; Chicago, Illinois; or Houston, Texas offices, reporting directly to GHD's Assistant General Counsel, US. The successful candidate will join a collegial 20 person North American Legal, Risk & Compliance Team and provide support to an entrepreneurial 3,700 person strong North American business.
As part of the Legal, Risk & Compliance Team in the capacity of Counsel-US, the successful candidate will be responsible for the following duties:
- Undertaking contract drafting, review and negotiation and advising regarding project pursuit in support of GHD's US professional engineering and consulting business;
- Owning legal and risk support for GHD's US based construction business;
- Managing project disputes, potential claims and litigation matters, both directly and with local external counsel, and occasionally attending at mediations or hearings; and
- Advising GHD's internal client base in respect of a host of ad hoc legal, risk and compliance matters, including: legislative compliance; employment law and corporate policies; real estate; Federal contracting; intellectual property; privacy, data security, management and data breach response, and anti-spam compliance; subpoena response; mergers and acquisitions; etc.
The successful candidate will possess the following required qualifications, experience, and skills:
- Law degree from accredited law school;
- Must be qualified to practice law in the United States;
- 5-10 years of experience gained in a law firm or corporate legal department;
- Significant experience in commercial transactional matters, with a preferred focus on construction/design professionals;
- Superior drafting, analytical, organization, time management, and task prioritization skills;
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to interact effectively and efficiently with members of GHD's Legal, Risk & Compliance Team, internal clients, and clients' in-house and external counsel;
- Demonstrated problem-solving, negotiation, drafting, and conflict resolution skills;
- Ability to travel as needed (amount varies from infrequent up to 5%).
